2008-02-06 07:43:00 | when you make a phone call do you hear any other noise beside the dial tone before placing the call | beama (111) | |
2008-02-06 07:57:00 | Think of any changes that have happened recently - to your computer, building works on the road, anyone with a new electric fence near the telephone line etc If you can't think of anything ring Telecom and ask them to do a line check.

2008-02-06 07:59:00 | What sort of modem do you have? External or internal? Being a rural resident I am sure you are familiar with the effect electric fences have on dial up connections. Have you checked for any electric fences nearby that may have a short circuit? | Jen (38) | |
2008-02-06 08:42:00 | Any electric fence noise would be easily heard on the phone when making a call. It sounds as if your modem is actually connecting but then drops off almost immediately. If you have sky digital disconnect the phone line from the sky decoder. Check your mail program is not set to hangup after sending and receiving. Try changing the port speed of your dialup connection and also in the modem properties to 57600 Add a modem string to your modem, this depends on the modem model but +MS=V90 works for most recent models.

Had this happen a lot is my area years ago and it turned out to be a modem problem at Xtra . They gave out another phone number to dial and this gave access to different modems and problem went away . As I say this was a few years ago now though . |

2008-02-11 08:08:00 | It is very important that you first try to establish if the line sounds good. You need to unplug everything except one phone, then dial "0" on that phone and have a good long listen to the line to see if crackle , hissing or ticking is noticeable. Then ring someone and have a conversation and ask them if you sound clear/muffled/loud/quiet etc. If possible try using this line to send and receive faxes. If all these tests don't reveal any problems then you can assume the line is probably ok, and should look more closely at what is going wrong in the PC. Could there be any mistake with the password? (eg, caplocks on??) Also check in your "Network and dialup connections" page, and verify that the connection properties are set to "redial if line is dropped". While you are in the dialup connections screen, it would be worth trying to "Make new Connection" and re-enter the dialup parameters, just in case the settings were corrupted in the original dialup connection settings.
