637858 2008-02-06 05:42:00 I have an old laptop, that doesn't have an ethernet card in it.

Using a USB cord, would it be possible to get it connected to the internet? I currently have three PCs connected, via a router. Using a cable connection.

Even better, can I get the laptop connected to the net without dropping the other PCs?

637859 2008-02-06 05:50:00 Get an ethernet card if it can use one .

Or wireless card / USB adapter, if the router is wireless as well .

637860 2008-02-06 05:56:00 You can use ethernet and USB at the same time if you wish.

You will need to install the USB driver for your router.

637861 2008-02-06 06:06:00 hmm, what sort of price would I be looking at for a laptop network card? I can post the specs if need be. (It's my partners, which she bought in 2001/2, so is past it, but I would like to keep for the hell of it) the_bogan (9949)
637862 2008-02-06 06:08:00 Depends what its got on it like slots.

USB (if it doesnt have any spare slots or whatever would probably be cheaper).

Thats if the router supports wireless as well.

Is the router wireless as well?

Whats the model/brand of this laptop, and whats on it? Like slots etc?

637863 2008-02-06 06:16:00 The Router is a Linksys BEFSR41, no options for USB.

The laptop is Toshiba, Intel Celeron processor, a grand sum of 896 processor. (112 ram) it does have a space for a network card.

637864 2008-02-06 06:36:00 OK, if you have a wireless router and a free USB port/PCMCIA port on this Toshiba laptop, all you need is either a wireless USB adapter or PCMCIA card which will set you back around $50 for either option (could find them cheaper on TradeMe etc)

I would recommend a PCMCIA/network card to leave USB ports free:

637865 2008-02-06 06:37:00 So what kind of slot has it got ?

Cardbus or PCMCIA? Or are they the same thing?

If its a cardbus, you can get one of these ( . dse . co . nz/cgi-bin/dse . storefront/47a9548a00b83e4a273fc0a87f3306c0/Product/View/XH8267" target="_blank">www . dse . co . nz)

PCs?
IF you have a spare socket on your router and IF you don't have wireless on your router and if you don't want to spend too much on a card the old laptop - for around $50 you can get an external USB to Ethernet adaptor. Advantage is that you could use it on your next laptop or PC or etc.
