637718 2008-02-05 06:39:00 Some of you will remember I asked questions recently about DVD writer options . I ended up buying a Pioneer DVR-212 DVD Writer (SATA) . On investigation I have a GA-K8VT800 motherboard - also with SATA . I didn't receive any cables with the DVD writer .

Now - would someone please give me clear and precise instructions as to what attaches to what when I/Himself open up the box?

Do we just unattach the present cables and reattach to the new model (and I think not, as the previous writer was not SATA)?

I see some SATA connections on the plan of the motherboard . Speedy said "If your PSU has a SATA power adapter on it, use that instead . "

The PSU is a Thermaltake W0008RAC, Silent Purepower 420W ATX PSU .

I await your knowledgable instructions eagerly & thanks for your help, as always! :)

637719 2008-02-05 07:10:00 You need 2 cables

This for the data (www.dse.co.nz)

And the SATA power adapter from the PSU, if its got one.

You dont use an IDE cable, since it wont fit.

The SATA connection on the mobo is for data only, not for power.

"The SATA connection on the mobo is for data only, not for power . " Thanks for that clarification .

Wish us luck - probably at the weekend - I'll broach the subject! I was just preparing myself in advance .

Thanks a lot Speedy . :)

637722 2008-02-05 08:32:00 Use the time to research the sata connections on your motherboard. The Pioneer being the latest and greatest of sata doesn't play nicely with some older sata chips on motherboards.

From this know it all Aussie club.cdfreaks.com

"Basically the ASUS and Pioneer SATA drives are native SATA and they don't work on the poorly designed motherboards at present."

I'd say why did Pioneer release drives that don't work?

Himself has just given up smoking (again!) - he's a bit grumpy. Negotiation is required... :)

One more question, Speedy? That 'red' SATA connection on the mobo is where we put the other end of the data cable(red cable found and inserted into DVD writer successfully)?

And then we look for the SATA power adapter from the PSU - as you said - if there is one. Otherwise we just use the existing power connection from the PSU?

Well, actually - it is two questions!

Again - thanks for you patience. :)

637725 2008-02-06 05:46:00 If the PSU doesnt have a SATA power plug/adapter, you'll have to get one of these (www.dse.co.nz)

But these adapters arent that good. They can come out, and cut the power off to the DVD / whatever SATA device.

It used to happen often when I had one of these adapters, going to the SATA hdd here. Once the pins lost contact, I couldnt boot.

So, in the end, I brought a PSU with the connector on it.

Its better if the PSU has a SATA power adapter.

637726 2008-02-06 06:24:00 I thought I might have had one of those in the 'Box' - but when I looked at it, it only had three, not four silver prongs . Not sure what it is/is for!

If there isn't a connector on the PSU (haven't looked yet - as that is fairly major understaking - Himself has made it all quite difficult to get everything out - but it is tidy!) we use the Dick Smith suggestion . How would it be if we (I mean Himself) stuck insulating tape around it to hold it together? Just a thought . . . :badpc: !

637727 2008-02-06 06:45:00 You could try, its not the adaptor that comes out itself. Its the wires in them. Speedy Gonzales (78)
