637623 2008-02-05 04:01:00 New install Ubuntu 7.10 on a 160gb drive.

I have installed ndiswrapper and a Windows XP INF driver for my PCI wireless card, Realtek RTL8185. However, I think the 8180 driver is being used which is reportedly buggy. I would like to know whether the linux driver here: www.realtek.com.tw will work and how to install from scratch.

I can't seem to get WPA-PSK secured wireless going, maybe to do with the driver, there is no WPA option in network monitor applet (nm-applet), only WEP and LEAP.

What makes it worse is my system completely locks up when I apply network changes.

Off-forum help would be great too.

Cheers

637624 2008-02-05 04:32:00 The idea with ndiswrapper is to use the winbdows drivers. Thats what ndiswrapper requires

And incidentally, the XP driver on that pages uses the RTL8187 driver

637625 2008-02-05 04:42:00 A search in Google says theres a bug with 7.10 and that wireless adapter / drivers

And some say it may depend on the version of the kernel.

And other posts say this adapter works fine in Edgy and Dapper.

But doesnt say anything about it working in 7.10, except that WEP should work. And noone can get WPA to work.

637626 2008-02-05 05:06:00 Well I'm very stuck then.
No idea why the system would be locking up?

What are you doing just before the lockup?

It happens when I try to connect to the network (I turned on WEP). I've just reinstalled ubuntu. The Live Disc actually locked up as well when I tried connecting.

637629 2008-05-29 08:45:00 Where can I find a decent "how to" to use ndiswrapper and what XP files do I need to copy to Ubuntu to make it work? I have an Acer Travelmate 2303LCI with an IPN2220 chip and am trying to connect to a Linksys WRT54G router. I
have no problem with XP, but can't seem to find out how to make it work with Ubuntu. Thank you for any help.

This maay not be the best forum for linux issues so head to www.ubuntuforums.org (http://www.ubuntuforums.org)
You'll have more of a chance getting your problem resolved. There's quite a lot about ndiswrapper and wireless driver resolution on there, but I do warn it may take some hours to find a solution that works for you... just out of experience.
