637554 2008-02-05 02:07:00 Hi all,
A friend has given me her 256mb usb pen after her daughter used it in an apple computer, she's not sure what she did but now it's unreadable in windows and I'm unable to format it back to FAT. I can get the format options up when when i hit format it says 'windows was unable to complete the format'

I'm using winxp pro sp2.

any suggestions?

637555 2008-02-05 02:25:00 Use something like GParted (sourceforge.net) and give it a go.

Download the .iso and burn it to a CD using imgburn (www.imgburn.com).

Maybe time for an upgrade? They are worth nothing these days, 256MB isn't very large either. I got a 4GB one for $40 the other day.

637556 2008-02-05 02:28:00 Don't mean to seem facetious, but for what they're worth nowadays, I'd just chuck it, and buy a new one. If it's that small, it's probably a few years old, and I've seen a few mem sticks in that age bracket get a bit senile!! :p

You can get 2Gb sticks for ~$30

The trick is to go to Control Panel – Admin tools – Computer Management – Disc Management.

There you can see your drive so you right click and re-partition and low level format.

After that you can High Level format.

Worked for me. ;)

i know they're cheap now but it's not mine to just chuck, she's bought another one btw but would still like this one so her daughter doesn't borrow hers and do this again.

thanks wratterus, i'll download that iso and let u know how that goes.

B.M - it appears in disk management as unreadable and cannot do anything with it.

cheers

Hmm, if it appears then you should be able to re-partition

The re-partition part is important and you must nominate the size of the partition if windows can't work it out. In your case 250k.

If you can't get passed there, then things look grim. :(

637560 2008-02-06 08:24:00 I had the same problem with a USB drive that I formatted with Linux which I got back to FAT using files.extremeoverclocking.com
