637519 2008-02-05 01:20:00 I should probably put this in Chat as theres no fix you guys can give:

In the last two weeks there has been an incredible number of people off our little exchange in Wyndham and also in neighbouring Edendale losing internet.

I actually had a queue when I got home one day last week.

Calls are logged with the ISP, its forwarded on to Telecom, after an average of 5 days it comes back up, lasting between 4 hours and 2 days before its down again.

Got hold of the Downer guy today who tell me its all Telecoms fault, they only look after the copper and our Nokia hardware/software keeps resetting and Telecom have to rebuild the PVC.

I have gotten dragged into it being the local tech and people are losing patience with having to log new faults with the various ISPs over and over.
The Downer guy also told me "Southland has different settings to the rest of NZ".

He then told me to contact his boss, who is unavailable and not returning calls.

637520 2008-02-05 01:28:00 Bugger.

Downers explanation of it seems a little far fetched.

637521 2008-02-05 04:01:00 "Southland has different settings to the rest of NZ"- LMAO!

So thats what the Downer guys do all the day rather than fixing things promptly- coming up with the most novel and ludicrous excuses.

637522 2008-02-05 04:15:00 Three times now within the last three months my xtra broardband has been down. The first time I went through all the unplugging stage to no avail and the tech said he would ring me back. After two hours he had not rung me back and all of a sudden the modem lights lit up and I was back in business.
Second time same old procedure unplugging this and that and tech wanting me to unplug everything from sky telephone connection to St.John's ambulance alert system. Told him I was 84 years old on my own and got dizzy everytime I had to bend down and unplug this and that. No offers to send someone to help. Gave up in disgust and thoughts of scrubbing the whole thing and going back to dialup. Four hours later without any unplugging or touching anything all of a sudden I was connected.
Latest episode same old story. Tech wanting me to unplug this try modem in all four jackpoints etc., etc. Could hardly understand him as when I asked him to speak more slowly he upped his volume and this distorted his voice so I could not understand anything. Gave up in disgust and sat down with an orange drink to cool off and yes you guessed it, the darned thing connected without me doing anything.
Now I deduce rightly or wrongly that these faults are not with my setup but something at their end or along the lumps of copper and stuff that is their business to maintain.
What do you think ???

637523 2008-02-05 05:06:00 I really do feel for you and being 84 probably hasn't a lot to do with it. Apart from the fact that it is maybe more difficult for you to get up and down plugging and unplugging things at the back of your computer to the whims of the helpdesk staff whose first language is not English! The problem is with Telecom and unfortunately there probably isn't a lot you can do other than changing to a better more considerate ISP.

There has been a problem with faulty modems which Telecom supplied, in the fact that they were not configured properly.

Get back to us here if you want more advice on anything at all, or you want to change providers. Good luck and keep up the good work in this great world of technology!

They just get told what to do, they're not responsible for the design or operation of the ADSL gear. If you want a solution you have to go higher.

637526 2008-02-05 06:07:00 Same sort of issues here, if you complain enough, they reset the ports on the cards, every time I get an advanced tech guy from Xtra booked after a call, the DSL stays up for about a week, then the signal is up and down like a whores draws.

The bit that pisses me off most is I'm in the inner city, no out in the sticks. There are only 2 exchanges servicing Napier, Taradale and Marewa. I'm 4 km from Marewa so while I wont get fast speeds, I expect better for my $80 p/mth.

Those advets on the TV for Telecom BB really make my blood boil, the check of it, they cant even provide for exicting customers, yet they spend zillions on locking down more customer for a 12 mth contract.

What ever happened to fair trading?

For a non technical consumer like me would you please explain what you mean by them resetting the ports. In other words is the intermittent problems I am having their fault??

They always want you to unplug everything - a real pain in the proverbial! And then because you are using a wireless router - they don't want to know. :(
