314172 2005-01-15 02:51:00 I find the price of vodafone NZ too expensive.

I called my dad to see if a NZ resident can hook up to a Hong Kong mobile service provider and he said yes but very expensive.

I already knew the answer but i thought I might ask.

Are there such thing as a international mobile service provider?

Anybody can join the service provider and get certain free mins per month to any place in the world if you pay this much money so and so per month?

314173 2005-01-15 03:39:00 No.

"Free minutes" do not usually apply on any plans I am aware of, when using another service provider's network in another country.

It costs money to provide a local network service. What you suggest would probably mean that we would not have any affordable mobile networks at all.

314174 2005-01-15 05:53:00 No. The bigger players are Vodafone and AT&T. And that's about it. ~sy~ (95)

Unlikely to lower costs if they do.

Consider the millions of $ required to build another network of cellphone towers.
Many $millions required just for the resource consent processes, without the huge cost of the equipment.

Then factor in the low population of NZ from which to get a financial return.

How do you see that giving lower costs I wonder?

The 4th paragraph says

314180 2005-01-16 02:23:00 You're not meant to understand it. It's corporate buzztalk. (There are ruder descriptions of this sort of thing). Graham L (2)

"Mrs Howard says the RFI process has given TelstraClear and Telstra a great deal of confidence in the commercial viability of building a next generation network in New Zealand."

What about that is unclear..?
Telstra are talking to possible suppliers of equipment to built a competing mobile network.

Just do not expect prices to come down. Possibly the reverse in fact. The existing players could possibly raise prices and still be competitive with a new network.
