I'm in Taranaki, was lying in bed (as ya do) and sounded like someone was banging on my door (hinge is lose) got up, relised everything else was moving.
First quake i've felt for a while!

Yeah, the one at 8am. It was only a 5.5 according to GNS, but registered over most of the country as far as you can see from the drums.

Sounds like there is significant damage in Wellington (3rd hand information according to a workmate), I'd be interested in hearing if anyone hears any (legit) updates.

315486 2005-01-20 20:00:00 Terry Porritt should have got a nice shake in Upper Hutt, hpe your crockery survived. 5.5 within 5k of Upper Hutt, 30k deep. Could be the same spot as the U/H swarm last year.

Got a good rattle in Lower Hutt. We normally rock & roll with a warning rumble here on the Valley floor, but this one rolled, shook and jumped with no warning. Could hear things banging, rattling and crashing and could see the movement looking down the hall but, amazingly, nothing broken.

We certainly did Murray, but funnily enough did not feel the 3.7 quake at 8.02am, nothing fell over, chimney was not cracked, nor were toilet pans cracked.

For those with local knowledge, the epicentre, converting the lattitude and longitude to NZMG , and depending on how precise the 'Geonet' figures are, was located near to the end of "Three Skulls Road', a dirt road in the Akatarawas near to Canon Point Walkway.
About 3km due west of where I live.

315488 2005-01-20 21:49:00 But did any of the stuff in your splendid playroom fall off the shelf ??? TonyF (246)
315489 2005-01-20 22:16:00 No Tony, but things wobbled a bit, I was sitting in front of the computer and the monitor shook, then I thought, 'spose I should stand under the doorframe. Our little dachshund came running to my room in fright :)

But nothing broken or fell off shelves etc. So it couldn't have been that bad, most likely much less than 1/2g.
