Come to think of it, on the way to the kitchen I do recall someone discussing in some talkback program Harry's past mistakes, and something about joining the army in a couple of years, and that he hadn't had any full time education for a couple of years and furthermore that his gap year was perhaps excessive. |

| 313955 | 2005-01-15 08:36:00 | My word there are some frightfully liberal people here . Anything goes eh? Do what you like and never mind anyone else . Unfortunately we all live in a society with other people . There are obvious benefits to this - law and order, education facilities, hospitals etc . With benefits come obligations . Sadly people who speak blithely of freedom and rights, completely overlook the concurrent responsibilities that attach to those rights . Thus Harry has a fine old life courtesy of the British taxpayer . He is a Royal . He has obligations . He is not free to do and say as he pleases . This may offend many of you but it is reality . Harry didn't ask to be born a Royal, but none of us have any say in our birth . We all have to take our chances . The Nazi regime was the epitomy of evil . Indeed it is difficult to find words to adequately describe this nadir in human civilisation . But evidently people here, a scant 50 years later, think Nazism is ok for a bit of fun . Harry cannot and does not exist in a vacuum . He is a member of a constitutional structure which extends back more than 1200 years . If he wasn't Royal, he wouldn't have attended the fancy schools on his own merits, or have known the other Hooray Henrys who are his privileged friends . So Harry must be sensitive to the opinions and sensibilities of the British people . This example won't last forever . He could have dressed as Napoleon and had a good laugh . But in 1905 that would have been offensive . |

Winston, i see your point, but hope that the assumption above is wrong. My point is that if Harry wants to make a twit of himself in private, then so be it. This may not be at all realistic, but in my ideal (fantasy?) world, we all get a private life, even Harry. Hitler and the boys did their best (worst) to create some of the most truly awful times in our planets history. It was not cool. Few orginisations have done more human damage for such silly reasons. I hope no-one takes the veiw that it is or was "fun". |

But evidently people here, a scant 50 years later, think Nazism is ok for a bit of fun.Sure, it was bad, extremely bad. But people make light of a lot of bad things, often after a much shorter time than this. Ok, The Sun did a spread on a royal - that's what it does, it's a cheap nasty rag. The fact that Jewish elders etc are now trying to get mileage out of it is ridiculous - it really makes a mockery of those that died in those atrocious conditions. Should they go and burn down all the costume stores that have Nazi costumes, or all those with war memorabilia collections? Start hunting down all the actors that have ever played Hitler in a film (comic or otherwise)? It seems a lot of people, with a lot of collective sand in uncomfortable places, that have nothing better to do are getting all bent out of shape for what amounts to a pretty damn small faux pas. I mean hell our prime minister wore pants when meeting the Queen (or something along those lines) which is frowned upon. Who cares? |

People causing problems for other people on basis of race/sex/etc is a nasty human habit that does not go away as Germany's Nazis, or when any other any other hate groups are finally defeated . Sometimes disguised as being anti-Nazi activity attempts are made to ruin lives . About a decade ago a comment of hate originating from from Israeli embassy in THIS COUNTRY about the possibility of refugees being hidden war criminals led to a lot of social or financial difficulty for those whose managed to get out of the war torn homelands who were of the specified "wrong" origins . My sons Lithuanian grandfather was one of the old men whose lives were suddenly disrupted because of casual racism from a Jewish source which ironically was done in the name of preventing these sorts of things from ever happening again! I hear on the radio yesterday an ad for a mortgage company run and staffed exclusively by women, who only deal with women . One wonders how the sexual discrimination clauses built into the human rights act apply to this firm? It would appear that opportunities for employment and finance are now being denied on basis of gender! The Nazis started gently, and were tolerated . In this country things have started gently, and are tolerated . Sometimes i think that we focus so much on the hate that happened 50 years ago with all the pomp and ceremony that the Nazis gave it, that we ignore what is happening in our own back yard! I don't believe for a moment that Harry had the brains to see the consequences of his party costume, but he has done much good by causing people to look at human behaviour in general . I hope that we may see not just the evil of the Nazis, but of all the other organisations that have killed large portions of the populations for reasons of race, religion etc . The catholic church is a respected organisation whose history was at one stage as deadly as the Nazis, but this fact is so often ignored . Time indeed moves on . :2cents: |
