638109 2008-02-10 23:03:00 The other computers are XP and OSX. The XP computer doesn't seem to have any problems picking up the OSX network, so I don't see why the Vista one should. Went into firewall and allowed network access, but should try with it off entirely. Maybe I'll set up router firewall and disable entirely? Thebananamonkey (7741)
638110 2008-02-10 23:07:00 Do all of them HAVE the same workgroup name??

I would change all of them to Vista's default workgroup name, which I think is workgroup.

638111 2008-02-10 23:37:00 In Vista you have to turn on Network Discovery other wise it can be hell on wheels trying to get a network to function.

Instructions from Microsoft on How (windowshelp.microsoft.com) or a More graphical View (www.home-network-help.com) THEN comes the fun part - sharing Vista folders, if you have any problems with them please advice, its different to sharing than XP.

638112 2008-02-11 20:02:00 No doubt about it. Problem was definitely
associated with Jzip. Downloaded it from
2 locations today and reintroduced the
fault on both occasions. This was after a
thorough cleanup. I've gone back to Winzip
now and no problems. Strange, ain't it.
Vista users be aware of Jzip.
Thanks CyaBro & Speedy Gonzales.

Why on earth would they change a system that worked so well in the first place? I wish I could just open the comp for full file sharing. It's not like I'm CIA or anything, although MS seems to think we all keep skeleton closets on our comps. Hopefully OS7 comes as a back to basics, logical OS. *sigh*

Vista security / sharing uses a system like Server 2003 - hence better security, while it makes it more of a hassle to share folders it is more secure. People want security - so theres always a trade off.

Did you manage to see / share the folders or do you need more instructions on making them visible over a LAN?

638116 2008-02-11 22:41:00 Not at home atm. I think I know how, it's just that explorer tends to crash when I try. Not very convenient. Sigh. Thebananamonkey (7741)
638117 2008-02-11 23:10:00 No Need to go anywhere near explorer, you only share folders you want others to see / use, not the whole drive. wainuitech (129)
638118 2008-02-11 23:13:00 I was just trying to do it the easy way. I don't mind what others see, so I figured it was easy enough just to share the lot. Vista didn't like that too much though. So it's no a bug so much as me being over ambitious? Thanks. :) Thebananamonkey (7741)
