| 314583 | 2005-01-17 21:52:00 | i'm sure many more people would buy macs if they didn't cost an arm and a leg. like I said in the other thread, asthetics is completly different from usability Not all Macs are expensive the eMac is good value. store.apple.co.nz Anyway the price is not important anymore, it is getting secure troublefree internet that has become more important. Spyware problems have reached epidemic proportions for Windows users and it is getting more difficult to detect and remove as many prevent access to websites or email and results in expensive rectification from experts. The continual scanning, monitoring and updating of all the various programs now needed to keep windows and MS programs operating and to try and have a reliable and secure internet experience must be so frustrating and time consuming and it does not have to be this way. I don't run any anti-virus or spyware removal programs and have never had a problem with viruses, dialers, trojans, spyware, homepage hijacks, or problems accessing websites or email. Feel sorry for you Window people but good luck anyway, your problems are going to get a lot worse before they get better unfortunately. |

Spyware problems have reached epidemic proportions for Windows users and it is getting more difficult to detect and remove as many prevent access to websites or email and results in expensive rectification from experts. Did you say something? Sorry, I was just reading about Apple having to patch security holes on OSX The continual scanning, monitoring and updating of all the various programs now needed to keep windows and MS programs operating and to try and have a reliable and secure internet experience must be so frustrating and time consuming and it does not have to be this way. ehm... I haven't done a full scan or manual update of a virus scanner on over 2 years, yet have never got a virus. Nor have I had to update Spyware scanner, and the only things that got through were cookies that IE let in. I don't run any anti-virus or spyware removal programs and have never had a problem with viruses, dialers, trojans, spyware, homepage hijacks, or problems accessing websites or email. That's lovely. But since Apple's marketing the Mac as "Un hackable" and "immune to viruses", any bets on how long that'll last? Anyone? Feel sorry for you Window people but good luck anyway, your problems are going to get a lot worse before they get better unfortunately. I feel sorry for you two. BTW, don't eat your Mac (sal.neoburn.net). ;) |

Feel sorry for you Window people but good luck anyway, your problems are going to get a lot worse before they get better unfortunately . I will no doubt regret saying this as it will probably come back and bite me on the bum but I do not constantly run spyware detection programs or an arsenal of spyware tools, etc either . All I have is an anti-virus and firewall on both computers and apart from the occasional warning about infected emails and a couple of trojans that soon got squashed that is the only bother I ever have . My own websurfing habits are utterly boring (most of the time ;)) but the family's computer doesn't suffer problems either . I have not checked to see where that computer has surfed to for ages but I expect it occasionally wanders off to some interesting places at times . The others do know, however, how these pests get onto computers and they know the consequences should it happen - instant reformat without any data backup . Although innocent inexperienced and unknowledgeable people do get caught out, from what I have seen on most of the computers I have cleaned up, the majority of them get what they asked for . |

Perhaps... Ive got nothing against macs really, only used them slightly at high school. Sure their expensive, but I like retro PCs,and having that 2ghz processor instead of 1ghz,will it make your internet browsers run any fast ;-) Til this year we had our 1995 IBM aptiva with win95[never had a virus checker,or any virus even though online alot since 98]It was funny after formatting it,after installing a few things i needed,to watch the start up time increase from 25seconds to over a minute :-P I think that if a more secure system was used by most people, then there would be less troubles with security and more with people not knowing how to use their OS :@@: I think I would prefer it like that - to keep the majority of the nastys out. "It's great for anything you can do on your own," he said. "It seems to me an incredible typewriter and that's it." :illogical heheeh |

| 314587 | 2005-01-19 05:25:00 | I keep hearing that Macs are more expensive but my Mac was actually cheaper than, at that stage, year old XP Box with similar specs except the XP's Hard drive is smaller and it doesn't have the DVD R . W . that my Mac has . Depends on what you want but the New Mac Mini for general, everyday use is not expensive for a Safe Computer . It should arrive in NZ by the end of January . Just use your existing PC Monitor, Keyboard & Mouse if you want to :-) It will certainly help my older friends that are getting upset at all the virus and spyware problems they have with their windows boxes and are not enjoying using them to keep in touch anymore . . apple . co . nz/public/" target="_blank">store . apple . co . nz Take Care out there . New Mac Mini non upgradeable performance slug emminently suitable for the fashion conscious . com/articles1176/" target="_blank">overclockers . com |

| 314588 | 2005-01-19 10:56:00 | There are weaknesses in all OS's. Theres been several lately in the Linux kernel that allow a user to either crash the machine, or privelage escelation. None that Ive noticed however appear to be remote and all require a local user account in the first place. Thankfully, Linux churns out the new (read: better) software a LOT faster than Doze or Mac appears to, with a new kernel release every 5 weeks, and distro's like Fedora being released two to three times a year! Basically we need things like Lindows that are aimed at the home user... We need an "Ultimate n00b" distro! Xandros and Lindows are getting there... but not near enough.... Chill. |

Likewise, every platform will have more problems as their user number increase. I do not believe that if we all converted to Linux, that it'd still be virus-free. |
