313849 2005-01-14 18:03:00 Why do you want a cell phone anyway? What makes you think you are so important you must have instant contact with the rest of the world?

Why do you want to send very poor quality photos over a telephone.

Have you got so much money you spend your days playing childish games on a telephone at god only knows what cost.

I haven't got a cell phone. I don't want one. If you want to contact me for some silly reason write me a letter.

Or send me a good old fashioned e-mail. :D :D

Many people have proven from experience that having one is very useful in times of emergencies etc. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when.

I don't want to send photos, but having the capability to store them is useful.

My primary reason for getting one is so I can get in touch with others when I need to, without having to hunt down a phone or computer. I'm not going to write a letter, in fact I haven't done so for years because it costs money to post, and takes a day to arrive. In the 21st century you need to communicate fast to do business, and sometimes email just doesn't cut it - I have found out the hard way.

You are welcome to have your opinion. My choice is based on my needs, and I have sought help from fellow PressF1ers to ensure that I am not buying a lemon - just like I would do if I was buying a computer.

Just because some people send ridiculous messages, which you would class as not "remotely interesting" doesn't mean that the technology cannot be used for constructive purposes. Some information is much easier to be sent in writing rather than verbally.

Even though I only text maybe 2 a month, I'd have to say, welcome to 21st century Jack. 200ish is nothing! If I really wanted to, and didn't use MSN (if I was still on dialup) then I'd probably go well over 500!

Nowadays, sometimes I do feel insecure going out myself without a cellphone. I hardly use it, and when I do, it's mostly to my parents or for emergency contact.

Back to the orginal discussion, if you think $10 is too much money for texting, then I would advise you to go straight into Vodafone. Unless you send 50 or more text per month, then theres nothing extra than Telecom can offer you. Also, Telecom uses CDMA technology. It's not as common as Vodafone's GSM. i.e. Vodafone uses a SIM card, where as Telecom don't. So you can easily change phones with Vodafone and keep your exisiting number should you need to upgrade in the future. I have found that it is also more convenient when travelling overseas, because I can easily buy a prepaid card overseas and just put their SIM in. And off course - their phones are BY FARRRR... more flash. Better value for money. With Telecom there is only so many phones that you can use -all of which you need to pay close to RRP prices for. With Vodafone you can go for parallel import if that helps financially -not that it's always good for future warranty issues.

Hope this helps

Thanks Sy. I think I'll stick to Telecom for now. Time for me to go visit a store and physically have a look at the different phones on offer.

Good idea. Feel free to ask them to put the batteries in and test the phone out. Watch for ease of use, how easy the buttons are to press -very important if your planning on texting heavily. Some of them will also be able to physically let you ring someone, e.g. their own 0800 number or something so that you can test it for reception quality, etc. Off course, you'll usually need to ask -otherwise they won't tell you. ;) They're called a salesman :p

*I admit that I am a salesman too, but I do not sell mobile phones ;)*
