There are always areas which are more dangerous than others and people need to identify these (well hopefully anyway) . I will always remember some twit doing a u-turn on the Rimutaka Hill too close to a corner (in my humble opinion) . Anyway some motorcycles come around the corner and the twit was in the middle of the road . One hit the ute, one hit the bank . Quite a mess really . I also think we live in a competative environment and this gets reflected in our driving . |

| 314456 | 2005-12-31 01:40:00 | A more cheering report in the midst of so much gloom - Yesterday I drove from Dunedin to Ashburton & back on SH1. Admittedly, our South Island roads aren't nearly as crowded as what you North Islanders have to cope with ( and Boxing Day is the jam-packed one, as people flock to Central Otago after having Xmas dinner at home) but after all the horror stories, I was pleasantly surprised. Trucks don't have holidays, it seems, but were considerate where it counted. No bad tailgating seen, though some drivers were following too close at high speed in queues, with only one battered car lying alongside the highway as evidence of an earlier accident. What was particularly noticeable was the overall shortage of speedsters (above 115/120k), even on those tempting long straight stretches of Canterbury Plains, compared with what I remembered from a few years ago. It seems the fear of speed cameras & the publicity campaign has made some difference. Ironically, I saw neither a camera, traffic cop or police car all journey. But I guess they were all being diverted to Central Otago for New Year's Eve duty in Wanaka, Queenstown & Alexandra..? (And sorry, manicminer, but I drive a Subaru Legacy. Don't hold it against me) |

| 314459 | 2005-12-31 02:50:00 | Just come back from a week long holiday up north conclusions so far. Hastings=I can see why they have had a spate of deaths with there young. taupo= very good considering the time of year and everyone is foriegn. Auckland=First time actually driving to Auckland myself, motorways not bad, had to double check the speedo when I was doing 120 and had cars wizzing past me like it was normal, just don't see that on the wgtn motorways, as for the city driving I still couldn;t find a park same as wellington The last time I drove to Auckland the road between Huntly and the Bombay slopes was awful and littered with crosses, but the express way they are putting through is great |

Obviously far more civilised people living on the South Island! You really shouldn't get problems on long straights, like those found on the east coast of the south island . Reason being, tailgaters are far easier to get rid of and/or are long gone before they get to the point of being an irritation . The problems tend to occur on windier, more challenging roads where people drive too fast for the conditions, without necessarily breaking the speed limit, and don't have the required level of skill or patience to just sit back, wait and time their overtaking opportunities . |

| 314461 | 2005-12-31 05:00:00 | Hastings=I can see why they have had a spate of deaths with there young. I should have warned you (as I live in Hastings). Hawkes Bay, in my opinion, have some of the worst drivers in the country - and they're mainly middle-aged European females. You learn very quickly that you quite often have to give way to people even when you have the right of way, because exercising your "right" quite often means that you will be hit by someone. In saying that, driving around early on Saturday or Sunday mornings is great - no traffic whatsoever (during normal months). |

| 314464 | 2006-01-01 07:21:00 | The bad driving problems of today are not caused by Asians, roundabouts etc. etc. but speed and failing to keep left - and I mean left, that is: not having a wheel over the centre line at any time. | Oldferix (5581) | ||
