314385 2005-02-06 08:07:00 I saw an awesomely stupid move in Wgtn on Friday am. A woman was driving a late model high spec super dooper black sporty Holden along Adelaide Rd towards the city (we were going past where Athletic Park used to be). I was a passenger in a taxi following her.

She sort of slowly drifted over the centre line and crashed over a traffic island and assorted warning markers. The car jolted into the air and crashed down again with a satisfying crunching of undercarriage type of sound. I hope it was her own car...

If a car had been coming towards her and there was no island there, she would have had a head on collision with the other vehicle. Last seen parked on the side of the road (probably counting the skid marks, or otherwise mopping up). Needless to say the cabbie and I were not terribly sympathetic.

Sigh...

How on Earth do scum like this ever manage to get a drivers licence?

They deserve to get put away for a very long time. And hopefully never to be allowed to drive again.

314387 2005-02-25 22:15:00 My observations based on on my insignificant generalist viewpoint as an immigrant:

Many Kiwi drivers are self-centered (read selfish) drivers, the do not take other people on the road into consideration. Typical example, pushing and shoving into lanes with scant regard for others already there, changing into fast moving lanes while going much slower. There is no concept of waiting your turn in a queue.

Kiwi women drivers are the aggressive drivers on the road. This is quite scary since I would guess very few of them attended any advanced driving lessons and probably would not have a clue on ho to regain car control in an emergency like a skid.

The 2 second rule don't work, as fast as you try and leave yourself a safe following distance some A-hole will push in, more than halving your following distance. There is a limit to one's patience, eventually you close the gap because of these sods.

Kiwi drivers tailgate, no matter where you drive, even had a cop tailgating me. Even more scary is that the habit doesn't change when it's wet. This is just plain BAD driving due to major ignorance, any decent driving instructor should point out that there is NO chance of stopping in time without a decent following distance. The 2 second rule isn't defined properly by the road code, it should state 2 seconds gap at 50 kph, and one extra car distance for every 10 kph above that.

Beware of Holden and Honda drivers, these are the aggressive drivers on the road. Comparable to the BMW drivers elsewhere in the world, they seem to think the roads belong to them.

Indicators, what indicators? We can all SMELL you are turning or changing lanes...

314388 2005-02-25 22:48:00 no offence to bobo intended but his/her post shows exactly what makes driveing so interesting, everyone has a different style and veiwpoint.

The 2 second rule don't work, as fast as you try and leave yourself a safe following distance some A-hole will push in, more than halving your following distance. they are not "pushing in" they are just changing lanes, make a hole for them, don't be an @#$ and try to block em out. after all everyone has to change lanes.

the 2 second rule isn't defined properly by the road code, it should state 2 seconds gap at 50 kph, and one extra car distance for every 10 kph above that. ??? why add anymore distance? 2 seconds vary's the distance depending on speed eg if your driving at 100km the distance is far greater than at 50km/h. no-one can work out what distance it is a 50km/h when they are doing 100km/h and then add a car lenth per 10km/h......opps they just changed speed now i have to recompute all that.....groan.

to right...........very nasty habit. lazy drivers for ya!

314389 2005-02-25 22:54:00 You will all be in for a rude shock come February 27th 2005, because all the topics we have been talking about will be mandatory rules, whether one agrees with them or not . (And I have never said I dont signal right at an island, only that I think it unecessary) .
Even those following distances will be mandatory, so everyone will need to have a laser rule mounted in their cars :)

Dont believe me?

Read here:
. ltsa . govt . nz/rules/about/road-user-2004 . html" target="_blank">www . ltsa . govt . nz

and then download the pdf that spells out the mandatory rules:

. ltsa . govt . nz/rules/docs/road-user-rule-2004 . pdf" target="_blank">www . ltsa . govt . nz

I think this can button up this thread, more or less:thumbs:

Hey guys, February 27 is tomorrow . ;)

Remember, $150 instant fine for getting caught breaking certain rules - might be more for others . :eek:

314390 2005-02-25 23:09:00 Beaten me to it Mrs B. :) I was just going to say that!

Just to remind people, these are the mandatory minimum following distances:

FOLLOWING ANOTHER VEHICLE

The Road User Rule says you must maintain a safe following distance behind the vehicle in front of you (see below) and if going more than 50 km/h, you must leave sufficient room in front for a vehicle passing you to be able to safely move into the gap.

The legal minimum following distances set out in the Road User Rule are:

* 16 m, if travelling at a speed of 40–49 km/h
* 20 m, if travelling at a speed of 50–59 km/h
* 24 m, if travelling at a speed of 60–69 km/h
* 28 m, if travelling at a speed of 70–79 km/h
* 32 m, if travelling at a speed of 80 km/h or more.

Now if you do the sums, these work out at less than 2 seconds, but could anyone be able to remember all this?????????

There is also now the question of enforcement.
All cars will need to be fitted with sonar black box recorders, so that in the event of a nose to tail collision, the following distance could be read from the memory chip.

Also how can a police vehicle measure these distances, by squeezing themselves between you and the other car and measuring the distance back to you and the distance to the car in front?????//

What crap, it is an uneforceable law, and laws which are unenforceable by definition are bad.

It would have been much better for following distances to have been given as time separation, and as a guide.

314392 2005-02-25 23:48:00 i bet a lot (most) motorists are proberly not even aware they are any new rules.Having had the recent experience of being driven somewhere by my mother who travels everywhere in 3rd gear at 45-50 Km/hr, she took great pains in pointing out all the new rules to me. Every roundabout we went passed, I got a comment on when you should start indicating to notify others that you are about to leave the roundabout even if you are driving "straight" through. So the message is getting out there. But I have only seen it in the newspapers. I would of thought an intensive TV ad would of been done by now if they plan to clamp down on those who don't follow the new rules. Jen (38)

The issue is that people are doing unsafe lane changes, even when there is no gap at all. I'm not blocking them, but they are endangering others with their dangerous driving. I had it a few times that people were next to me and simply just came over. If I didn't brake hard I would have punted them in the side. I am concentrating on the road in front of me, and anyway cannot see their indicator (if used!) while they are driving next to me. The other issue is that they simply just push in into you relatively safe following distance and then jump on the brakes, making for a real possibility of a nose-to-tail to happen. Now do you still think I'm the selfish driver? I don't think so...

Simple maths tell us at 50 kph you travel 1.4 meters per second, at 100 it's twice that, i.e. 2.8 meters. Therefore with a 2 second gap you give yourself 5.6 meters to stop at 100 kph.
Given the average reaction time is 3 ms, that is 1.5 meters already traveled at 100 kph before you react, so that leaves you with 4.1 meters to stop in. Think you can do it, don't think so my friend. But add another 5 car lengths (avg 2.5m x 5) it gives you another 12.5 meters, bettering your chances quite a bit.

:rolleyes:

Simple arithmetic tells me you are out by a factor of 10 Bobo :thumbs:

50kmph = 13 . 89 metres/sec

Sorry to destroy your argument, I know it can be embarrasing :thumbs:
