637785 2008-02-05 16:26:00 Hey Everyone:

I have a very annoying problem and I can not seem to figure it out. Any help would be much appreciated!

So, here is the problem... I recently came into a toshiba m35-s320, that had a bad hdd. I happened to have an ibm r40 with a bad mb but a good hdd, so i swapped them out and it works perfectly now. or so i thought....

now when i boot up the toshiba with the ibm hdd, the brightness of the screen (which is usually set with the FN button) is at about 1/2 the brightness. i tried to use the FN button only to find out that it doesnt work anymore.

i went to the toshiba website and downloaded the correct drivers so that i could fix my problem and now i get an error saying that it can not install those drivers on this computer. i forget the actual error msg and will post it later (when i get the laptop back tonight) if its needed...

so my question to everyone would be: how can i fix this? can i remap a key to do this for me? or how can i get these drivers to load properly...honestly i dont care if the button works, but i need to see my screen. are there are other work-arounds for this?

Thanks!!!!

637786 2008-02-05 19:17:00 Hi Bwilly

I too, have a Toshi but a different model. When you say the brightness is set with the Fn button does this mean it is conjuction with another Function button. For example, to increase brightness on my lappie, one presses Fn + F7 together. To decrease brightness, press Fn + F6. If this is the case and your function keys are not working get back to me, I might be able to help.

637788 2008-02-05 19:56:00 Hi Bwilly

Thought that might be the case and went to Toshiba's website to check your User's Manual . Judging by this, your computer is very similar to mine, so I will try my best to help .

Have a search on your computer for the following Toshiba Utilities:

TFNCKY . EXE
In C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Toshiba Controls Folder

TPSMAIN . EXE
TPSBATT . EXE
In C:\Windows\System32 Folder

These are the files required not display drivers!! If you can't find them try to download them from Toshi's website . Are you able to get the original installation disk or perhaps get them from the old hard drive?

637789 2008-02-05 19:59:00 unfortunately, the old hdd is completly dead, so there is no going back for it...

i do not have the comp in hand at the moment, but i dont think any of those files are going to be there since this is a hdd from an ibm laptop...

i have some files that i downloaded from toshi's website, but they wouldnt install due to BIOS problems, i think..

im going to try and hunt around for them
