637753 2008-02-05 05:23:00 Been having a load of trouble with MANY XP PC's, Mainly after being infected with some sort of Spyware, all running IE6. Some Have FF as well, but that works fine.

Heres The problem: Its been driving me nuts for months trying to find a workable solution ( Short drive I know :p )

When ever you click on the desktop Icon For IE6 it wont open the browser, it simply creates a shortcut for IE6, if you keep clicking you end up with loads of shortcuts, the short cuts also create another shortcut etc.

If you go into add/remove programs, remove windows components, and then reboot and install IE7 from a direct download, not windows update, most of the time that works fine. Reinstall IE6 and same problem.

Tried all the usual stuff chkdsk, sfc /scannow, repair installs, manually removing IE from the Reg. Nothing fixes it.
If you go to Windows Update, that works, so does the IE in the "All Programs " menu, but even creating a shortcut to that wont work.
I've searched Google with god knows how many different wordings, can't find anything on MS anywhere.
Normally I end up wiping the drive and installing from fresh.

I also install FF which works fine, - Please no suggestions on " Use FF" IE is crap - or "Use linux" - FF is better I agree, but thats only a "patch" on the problem.
I'd like to actually do the repairs correctly not simply hide the problem?

637754 2008-02-05 05:30:00 Nup, just dump it and install IE 7, that's what Windows wants you to do anyway. Sorry, probably no help if you want to fix IE 6. lakewoodlady (103)

Whats worrying me is if its not fixed correctly and working before installing IE7 Is the system is not right- and what, if anything else is gonna fail.

I like to do jobs correctly, unlike some cowboys who simply don't care as long as they get $$. Patches usually will fail - I have seen it many times from other people.

637756 2008-02-05 05:39:00 Found a post in an IE newsgroup that MIGHT work.

The guy who had the prob said this.

My IE6 quit working a while back. Actually, it'll open up when I launch
it, but it launches two windows and neither one will work, they just keep
refreshing every few minutes.

Dont know if this is similar to what youre seeing, but another user posted
this site (iefaq.info:80)

Which has a file called ie-rereg.zip

Its got a batch file in it, which registers all the dl files in IE6.

After the guy who had the prob ran this, it was fine, (He could install IE7).

637759 2008-02-05 07:21:00 Ie 6 had a self repair functionality which I'm no doubt you're aware of ?......

controlpanel/addremove/....clik on IE6 clik 'remove' then clik repair in the popup box......

also I assume you've tried sfc ?

637760 2008-02-05 07:51:00 Bit weird that you have seen several cases of this now, yet google shows nothing. You would have thought there would be others with it too.

Be interesting to find out what does cause this.

637762 2008-02-05 08:34:00 Bit weird that you have seen several cases of this now, yet google shows nothing . You would have thought there would be others with it too .

Be interesting to find out what does cause this . Actually have it quite regular - but typically don't have any customers PC's on hand that are doing it at the moment . <<< Referring to drcspy's question regarding properties . Yes tried removing IE as suggested . If I load in IE7 after doing that, it works (IE7) .

The common effects are usually, loaded with spyware/ IE6 wont work any way/ FF Works OK but with pop ups/ Remove spyware/ IE plays silly buggers/ .

Prob a bad time to post this - Damn  - wish I had a PC here doing it tonight .

Updated: OK reworded my Google search to "click IE6 creates shortcut" found
This ( . mcse . ms/message2362543 . html" target="_blank">www . mcse . ms) Something to do with file associations And Here ( . tutorials-win . com/IE6/does-work-399508/" target="_blank">www . tutorials-win . com) .

Now I need a busted pc to test some of these answers and suggestions here  :o

Maybe some one can advice how file associations create shortcuts ?
