| 638933 | 2008-02-09 13:19:00 | does the recipe partition magic + vista home basic = problems on notebook? is there other partition manager program i can safely use with vista home basic? should i switch to xp instead of vista? how could i dual boot xp with vista without reformatting the vistas hardrive? |

| 638934 | 2008-02-09 14:54:00 | Thats a lot of questions so early in the morning. :eek: Partition Magic doesn't work in Vista - I am not aware of Symantec having any plans for updating it either. If you want to pay for partitioning software, I would recommend Paragon. Works a charm in Vista. Otherwise see GParted.... GParted is a brilliant Linux based tool (free obviously, being Linux...) that will allow you to do whatever the hang you want with your hard drive, and will allow you to split the partition into two or ten so you can multi boot whatever OS's your heart desires. Heres (sourceforge.net) a link to download the GParted Live CD...download the 0.3.4-11 .iso. Then burn it to a CD using a lovely little program called ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com). Then boot off the CD. For best performance, run disk defragmenter before resizing partitions. If you want to switch back to XP, thats entirely up to you. Theres not really any compelling reason to do anything of the sort...unless you want to use partition magic! :p Also I'm guessing you have a brand new notebook? If so, if you want to switch back to XP, check on the manufacturers website FIRST and make sure you can actually get drivers for XP, sometimes new lappys only have Vista drivers. |

Basic has items and structure different to XP. There are certain sections that are disabled in Basic, but can be turned on if you know how and the hardware can handle it. Regarding the Dual Boot XP /Vista - After doing the partition as Wratterus said - Instructions Here (apcmag.com) you can also get EasyBCD (neosmart.net) - download link at bottom of that page. |

Download site (neosmart.net) as described in the Article. Never used it, since I personally always use a Vista DVD. - Might give it a go though Its only 120Mb |
