638825 2008-02-09 07:21:00 I'm going to upgrade my computers memory and was wondering, does it matter if each 1 gb stick is the same band, speed or work wise?
Also, what is a double sided memory, I looked it up on wiki but i didnt really understand it, can someone give the short and layman version?
The maximum memory for xp is 2Gb right?

638826 2008-02-09 07:34:00 depends on your computer. Of it handles dual channel they you can buy it in pairs. eg 2 x 1gb sticks but packed and sold as a matching pair.

Check your motherboard manufacturer and see what brands/sizes they recommend.

638827 2008-02-09 07:37:00 The manual doesn't mention a brand, It just mentions 184pin PC1600/2100/2700/3200. Mateo1981 (12187)
638828 2008-02-09 07:37:00 The max amount of ram normal xp (32bit) can read is approx 3.25Gb xp pro x64 can read higher then this.

Although some older motherboards can not read 3.25Gb, due to chipset limitations.

Double sided memory is simply ram with chips on either side of the module.

This (www.crucial.com) tool will tell you exactly what your motherboard supports.

638829 2008-02-09 07:40:00 Different branded RAM sticks generally work OK together as long as they are of the same speed and CAS latencies. Faster sticks will slow down if they are coupled with a slower stick. For example, you have one DDR400 and one DDR333 stick. Put them both together, the DDR400 stick will run at DDR333.

As for single/double sided: "memory modules on the single-sided chips are denser, enabling more capacity. What took 16 chips to make a 256M module, now takes eight chips."

These days most RAM sticks are double sided, I think. Most motherboards today I think supports only double sided. What motherboard do you have?

XP comes in two bit-flavours - 32bit and 64bit. The 32bit can only allocate 3.25-3.75GB of memory, while 64bit can allocate more than 4GB.

NOT the manual. The manufacturer's web site.

With my ASUS board it has a long list of Memory module manufacturers and the ram piece(s) the board supports/recommends. Although others might also at the time I got my board I went with the fastest one i could get here in NZ that was on the list keeping with their recommendations.
