638408 2008-02-08 02:54:00 Oh dear - I knew the day would come. I have to fix a Mac.

Well not really fix it.

iBook running OS X 10.4.6.

Customer is trying to Install iWork, but apparently it needs an update, too big to download on dial up.

I can't get it on the net. Plug the ethernet cable in, and it gets an IP address etc etc, looks OK, even tried putting Orcon's DNS servers in manually, but no go.

I want to open a terminal window to do some ping tests etc, but, low and behold, the terminal is hiding!

I thought it was in utilities folder, but it isn't. Any ideas, either on why it's not getting on the net, or where the f**k the terminal has gone!

I am still adamant macs are crap, please prove me wrong! :p

638411 2008-02-08 03:47:00 Well, no joy with that. Thanks though.

If you have a sec wainui, have a read through the troubleshooting (docs.info.apple.com)! I have never used a mac for more than 20 mins before today, and I had already tried everything they suggested. Definitely the most unhelpful troubleshooting I have ever come across!! :groan:

638412 2008-02-08 03:53:00 Well thats 19 minutes more than me :D

unhelpful ? - Hmmmm - Take a look at the responce ( . computing . net/mac/wwwboard/forum/11495 . html" target="_blank">www . computing . net)

JEN - let WMG back for 1 question/answer

I'll keep looking, some one must have done this before .

Try entering the gateway ip as the dns server

638413 2008-02-08 03:57:00 Ahh good idea...trying that now. Edit - Nope. Same thing.

HAHAHA.

Good laugh. I notice it is also the only response to that question.

I was thinking exactly that about WMG, I'm sure he would relish being able to show one of us 'mac haters' how to fix one...but we can't have the best of both worlds! :D

Thanks, so far my searching has turned up b*gger all.

638415 2008-02-08 04:05:00 That link is a shorter version of the one you posted earlier.

Well, I'm off for the week. Thanks for your help...ill mull it over on the weekend and see if I can think of anything else.

Wainui, if you or anyone else has anymore suggestions, I'd be more than happy to hear them! Thanks mate, enjoy the weekend.

638416 2008-02-08 04:09:00 If theyve got dialup, are you using your modem/router??

If you are, is their line enabled for ADSL?

Whos line is it connected to?

Yours or theirs?

638417 2008-02-08 04:19:00 Terminal on a Mac is located in the Utilities folder in Applications in the Finder (alphabetical order) The update from Apple for iWork08 will fix a few bugs.

Type Termninal into Spotlight if you are stuck.

Did you try opening Safari to get on the net?

if all else fails System prefs>network>ethernet
