638980 2008-02-16 05:07:00 wainuitech:

After unplugging all my USB devices there was no change in the boot problem.
Incidentally I have a router which naturally does not use a USB port and neither does my Keyboard or mouse.

I did un-tic all the items in msconfig that you suggested...again with absolutely no improvement (I’m really sorry but this is beginning to sound like a broken record)
Incidentally the Chronos item refers to a multi source time checker...not essential obviously..But made no difference when it was un-ticked.
The DC Loading item is a desktop calendar...otherwise same as the above.
Bitmerer2 is indeed a bandwidth tester...otherwise same as above

I use CCleaner on a daily basis but this has no effect on my problem.

May I just make an observation as an essentially not technical person; the blockage seems to be at the logon stage.
Up to the blue 'Welcome' screen the boot sequence is normal and takes no longer that it ever did.
At the blue screen when I would normally get the option of logging onto the different accounts on the computer, this does not happen.
It's as if the computer is searching for an account to log onto or an instruction to do so, but failing to find one, eventually the blue screen fades to black (with the cursor showing and active) and stays black for more than a minute until eventually the Desktop loads.
It makes no difference if I have another User account on the computer or if I delete the account, either way I am never given an opportunity to log onto it.
I just thought that that point might help in diagnosing this problem.
Thanks to everyone for trying.

638981 2008-02-16 05:20:00 I would uninstall the ATI drivers, then use drivercleaner pro 1.5 (in safe mode, or whatever Vista has).

To remove everything else. (Select ATI/ATI CCC, and ATI Uninstall Utility).

Delete its folders in program files, or wherever they install.

Reboot, then see what happens. See if the prob is still there.

If it does the same thing, the ATI drivers arent the prob.

This is a Long shot - but worth checking - Open search, type in user ( vista makes you lazy using search :D ) open User Accounts - Click on the Left " Configure Advanced user Profile Properties" - look for the Button "Change user type", Make sure its set to "Local" - By right the Roaming should be grayed out.

Wainuitech:

The settings were as you describe they should be i.e. set to "local" with Roaming greyed out.

638984 2008-02-16 09:30:00 Okay - Did you try what Speedy suggested in Post #32 ?

This will let Vista load from default drivers, the first reboot may take a short while until Vista discovers it has to load new drivers for the graphics.

To be quite honest, I would need some exact directions to follow Speedy's advice .
I'm not at all sure how to do it exactly . :waughh:

Also as far as I'm aware, I am using default drivers now since I had occasion to reformat the computer about a year ago and at that time everything seemed to be working fine after the reformat so I just left things as they were .
That was obviously long before this current problem started .

638986 2008-02-16 10:02:00 Hmmm Thinking question - can you remember if ANY programs, Windows Updates , or anything changed and then you got this problem, anything no matter how small or unimportant at the time.

Just been thinking of the Vista I was posting from - my screen does go black - but how long is it black for - actually time it, not a guess.

One thing that May be causing it is the indexing - One function is for the search so you can find documents/ photos etc faster.

Can't advice as to where it is right now as I'm back on the Office XP :nerd: :D Doing paper work.

Honestly, I really cannot.
I have racked my brains about that, but nothing really stood out at the time that it originally happened.
I did however do an immediate 'System Restore' at the time...which made no difference, and which I then repeated two more times going further back in time with each restore...again no improvement.
In addition, at the time of my last reformat (about 18 months ago) I did take the trouble to make an Image of my entire computer, which as you know is a function that Vista Ultimate allows, after restoring my computer from the image...No improvement!!
This is totally inexplicable to me, but then again at age 63 I don't really know what I'm doing playing with computers in the first place!
