638970 2008-02-12 05:07:00 OOPS! knew there was something I was meant to do last night- this will be the quicker version as I have a job to do after dinner.

Creat A restore Point in case anythng goes wrong - Click start Orb/ in the search type in restore Look in the results for " System Restore", click that, clcik on "Open System Protection" Example (www.imagef1.net.nz) then Click on the Create Button (www.imagef1.net.nz) - you will then get the box at the top of that picture, call it anything you like - click "create".

Now download Winsockfix Here (download1us.softpedia.com)

or from the site Here (www.softpedia.com)

Double click the file, ignore any messages saying so and so not found error - it does do its thing. Reboot the PC when told to.

IF something goes wrong, open restore again from past instructions and select choose a different restore point ( directly above the one you used to create it) then select the point you created, and follow onscreen instructions.

This is the fast version, normally I'd pin point the trouble first to make sure, I know you said
unfortunately I'm not very technically minded and I have difficulty in even understanding the language let alone trying to make the various adjustments. but being the network device appears to be starting incorrectly this should fix it.

Regarding the pricing - any tech who knows what they are doing could test that in a couple of minutes + 1 or 2 reboots - NOT hours :groan: In the time it took to write this out it could have been tried. Its something in the startup some place.

NOTE: it will say 1 error at first - click OK then if you look you will see the program working ( blue writing bottom right of the window) takes about 15 seconds then another error message. REBOOT.

I have used this program on LOTS of Vista PC's with no Ill effects - only good results - But like every thing in this business sometimes things dont always work 100 %. This may or may not fix the problem, if it doesn't let us know and we can advice on something else.

638971 2008-02-15 00:26:00 Hello wainuitech:

Sorry to take so long in responding to your instructions, but I have been away from my computer these last few days .

I did in fact do exactly as you suggested and downloaded and ran Winsockfix .

Unfortunately it has made no difference at all .

Specifically, while it has not done anything bad, it also has not had any effect on the boot sequence problem .

Also, as I indicated in my original post, I still cannot create another User Account on this computer .
Actually I can go through the motions of creating a new User account and the new Profile does appear in the < Manage Accounts > dialogue box, but when I then go to look at the account in Windows explorer under in the <Users> folder, The new User account is not listed and naturally there are no folders assigned to this account . . . . yet when I go back into < Manage Accounts > the new User account is listed as it should be .
I really suspect (with minimal technical knowledge) that these two problems are related . :help: :badpc:

As always I am open to any suggestions .
Thank you for your interest .

No Worries, there's no time Limits on questions / answers.

You can try this - It may or may not help. Something is not quite right.

Double click Computer On desktop, on your drive right click it / Properties/ Tools Tab / Click "Check Now" select both boxes as Shown Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) click "start" - It may pop up with a messages saying it needs to run on next reboot, agree and reboot the PC, this will go through and check the system files,( may take a while to run as well- but let it run fully through) and hopefully fix the problems.

I succeeded in following your directions exactly as you described and the computer did take quite some time to complete the check but sadly it has made no difference to the boot sequence problem.

638974 2008-02-15 07:40:00 I have scanned my computer with NOD 32 as well as several on-line virus scanners in addition I have run Spyware Doctor, Adaware and Spybot S&D....all clean I am reasonably certain that I do not have any malware.
And as I said, once the desktop does load, the computer works normally.
looking back at the start of this problem -
What AV do you currently have installed ?
Have you EVER had Norton's / Symantec or McAfee installed

Just a few Ideas I'm thinking of, but I need to look at a few things.

Quickly - the Creating of the new User account - your own account is set to Administrator ??

I'd like to look at whats starting up when the PC starts.

2 things,
1.download Hijack This (www.trendsecure.com) Put it in a folder on your desktop, run it and select it to save a log file, copy/paste the complete log file back here.

2. you will need to do a screen capture - using the Snipping tool, heres how - click start in search type in snip select it, it will ask to place in quick launch - allow this. After it opens close it- then go back to search - type in msconfig open it, and go to startup tab. open the snipping tool, and get a screen shot of the items starting. Post that pic back Here (http://imagef1.net.nz/)

While the Hijack will show every thing, sometimes its easier to do it through the startup Tab. Failing this -if you are not to keen on doing the above, where in the country are you?
If you want I can do a remote desktop connection ( secure) to your PC and look myself - I would need you to download a program (quite safe) and secure then in a PM I would need some details from you that the program would supply.

Wainuitech:

I have NOD 32 Installed , fully updated and with a recent clean AV scan.

I have never ever had Norton's or McAfee installed.

I do use Firefox with the extension McAfee Site Advisor.

My User account is set to Administrator. In fact it is the only account (apart from an inactive Guest account) on my computer.

Below is my HiJackTis Log file:

Also I have uploaded two snips of my msconfig Startup tab as instructed.

In answer to your last question, I live near Warkworth in Rodney District and I would be quite prepared to do whatever is necessary to arrange a remote desktop connection if that is what proves necessary.
Many thanks.

Just one quick question, I did upload two snips (could not fit all of the Startup tab on one) to the link that you posted and I did receive the message that the upload was successful, but I do not see any sign of them in my main post on the forum now.
I hope you can access the snips or if you can not perhaps I need more direction as to how to do this.
Thanks.

I think I figured out how to link to the uploaded snips, may not be the most elegant of methods but I think it'll work.

638978 2008-02-16 03:50:00 Thanks symiggy: looked at the hijack Log and its more or less OK.

Thanks for the Screen shots, I was just going to write back how to do them  Been out collecting broken PC's from Customers - Hence longer time than normal to answer you.

Try this first - Unplug all USB devices except for the keyboard/mouse ( if they are USB) reboot - see if its any faster, if it is, put each device back in and reboot, until one of them causes the PC to Slow down again.

If no different, replug them back in. Is your Modem connected by A USB by any chance ?

Now this - Open the msconfig and startup Tab and UNTICK the following, these dont need to run on startup, but will still function if you need the application.

Untick -
Windows Defender
Both Brother Set... & Control Center - Note: these look at the printer and tell you its status - not required
Gmail - Will still work, but wont load or notify you at startup
Chronos -- What is this ? its running from the C:\documents & settings Folder - Shouldn't be needed
Java _ cant see fully, but prob thte updater
Adobe Acrobat - speeds up the reader by 1-2 sec - not needed
Quicktime
DC Loading ??? Whats this - expand out the C:\Program Files .... See what it is - Leave if not sure, or advice what it is
Googletool Bar
Bitmeter2 ?? Not to sure, looking at Google its either a Bandwidth Meter or a Spyware - disable it.

Next reboot - you will get a messages popping up saying you need to reboot to have the settings changed - Reboot. After the PC starts, you will get a box pop up, simply close it - You will also get a pop up from the clock area saying items have been disabled, close that.

NOTE/Warning:

Some of the Microsoft Items in startup can be disabled, but you need to move the bars next to the name to see what they are - One is the OS - DONT disable that - if you do the PC prob wont boot. Here is an Example (www.imagef1.net.nz) DONT untick that.
The screen shot is of One of my Vista PC's with nothing installed apart from the Magical Snap (screen shot capture) & Security software.

Thanks for allowing the remote bit - but at the moment I wont need it, If its still slow after this - It will need to be rethought as to the problem.
