638960 2008-02-10 01:23:00 That why the ATI error appears, because the latest version of the drivers are installed. Like they are on here. The error wont appear with 7.06 or under. Ta Speedy - I dont use ATI - don't like them, rather use Nvidia.

Make Note: ATI = ****:D

lol well I wouldnt have these ATI cards either. IF the useless Nvidia drivers didnt crash all the time.

Thats when I had Nvidia based cards.

Make note: Nvidia drivers are crappier than ATI drivers

Amen to that! Nvidia drivers have never given me any issues, no matter what OS. ATI drivers same story- we know about the problems, aren't going to do crap to fix them.

638963 2008-02-10 02:00:00 Thanks very much for all your replies, unfortunately I'm not very technically minded and I have difficulty in even understanding the language let alone trying to make the various adjustments.
Frankly I'm afraid that if I might make matters worse.
At least now the computer works well after it boots.
I guess I'll just have to learn to live with the problem...but thanks very much for your interest and suggestions.

Well, take it into a computer shop then. Your problem sounds like a right pain in the **** and you have a pretty good computer there. get it fixed and enjoy it to the max! :D

638965 2008-02-10 04:18:00 Well, take it into a computer shop then.

Sadly the vendors are not especially interested in my software problems.
I have spoken to them on the phone (I live 3 hours away by car) and from what I say they are convinced that it is primarily a software problem with which I have to agree, and so I'm not about to get any free fix-up jobs from them.

I would be prepared to pay some "reasonable fee" ..but they say it'll probably take an unknown number of (billable) hours. Sigh.

638966 2008-02-10 08:01:00 I think Wainuitech is correct, but just check one other thing, found this one a few vista pc now, the update programs get screwed up ie get interrupted and don't correctly finish, then get stuck in a loop of trying to update and load at the same time, check all the programs you have auto updating are actually doing in right.
I sugest you turn them off and do all the updates you need manually.

And then run msconfig and remove all the un-necessary programs loading when windows loads - just check what the files are and if you don't need it turn it off.

Vista wants to be GOD take charge and bend it to your will :)

TGD:

I did actually check this before and it would seem that almost all of the updates were successful.
There were only two that failed but they had downloaded again automatically (and successfully) the following day.

I thought that I would wait for Vista SP1 and see if that made any difference, and if not perhaps a re-format is the answer?

638968 2008-02-10 09:05:00 narrrrr Reformat is the last resort - check back here tomorrow and I'll post some instructions that are easy and have pictures.

You managed to do the event viewer  - so the rest is easier.
