638450 2008-02-08 23:17:00 Depends if youre on dialup or broadband Roscoe.

If dialup you have to enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) under the dialup's properties / advanced tab.

In XP (If XP is on the main PC). And you have to give Vista's LAN an ip address to go to (did you do this)?

It doesnt sound like youre on broadband. Vista should have been able to get on the net, if you were.

What are you using between the 2?? Ethernet? Wireless?

638452 2008-02-09 00:50:00 Speedy: Thanks for you reply.

I am using (wireless) broadband, recently installed, and have not had the laptop (slave) on the net since the change.

It seems, from what you say, that the laptop is set up for dial up and not for broadband?

The main PC has XP and the laptop has Vista. Am using ethernet between the two.

Don't know what you mean by that, so most probably not. If you could explain when ready, please. Ta.

638453 2008-02-09 01:32:00 If you right mouse on the local area connection icon / properties in Vista, wherever this is.

And then go to TCP/IP (whatever Vista has got), whats it on??

Obtain an ip, or use the following ip??

Whatever is here, the gateway HAS to be either the router (if you have a router, or the main PC's ip address). So the networked computer has somewhere to go (to get onto the internet).

And the preferred/alternate ip addresses underneath HAVE to have either your ISP's DNS server ip addresses (for preferred, or the router's ip address), and your ISP's alternate DNS server ip address. For you to get onto the internet.

If you dont type in the right ip address, or nothing at all (alongside gateway, or preferred ip address), you wont be going anywhere, if a computer is networked.

I know nothing about wireless internet, but if its got an ICS option, you'll have to tick it to get the other PC On the net.

Only other thing is, does wireless broadband allow you to have more than 1 PC on the internet?

638454 2008-02-09 03:06:00 Wainuitech: I have installed COMODO upon your recommendation . See the faith that I have in you?:D

It has had no problem with my network - set it up itself, unlike ZA where I had to tell it the range to allow . Great .

But what do I do to allow the slave laptop (running Vista) access to the net?

Your help, as usual, will be greatly appreciated . :) While SWMBO takes great delight in kicking me off MY chair to use MY pc to access the net, it would lessen the pain if she could use the laptop . Yes dear, yes dear, yes dear . . . . :waughh: LOL That made me smile - Awhhhh Shucks . Thanks

How I setup a lappie, so "normally" it will detect any network address is like this -

Open Comodo - up top select "Firewall" - The first time you install Comodo it will ask for a network name and options - as you can see Here ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/Select_Network . jpg" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) - you select it to allow network traffic - then once you click "Firewall" ( up top) and are in the Firewall settings Select "My Network Zones" ( on the right) .
Next select single click your network name - click the "add" button ( top right) select "new IP Address" then " A Range of IP Address" - in the box if you run a range of 192 . 168 etc in the first box have 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 then in the ending 192 . 168 . 1 . 255 . click "Apply" then repeat the process for another range of 10 . 1 . 1 . 1 - 10 . 1 . 1 . 255 . Example ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/IP_Range_Full . jpg" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz)

Add in what ever other ranges you need . 99% of the time the router is number 1 and issues out up to 254 different addresses, hence if you select 1-255 it covers every possible IP address the router will give .

Example: could be 10 . 1 . 0 . 1 - 10 . 1 . 0 . 255 or what ever the school runs .

This will allow all ranges through and then the lappie should automatically pick most networks ranges .

What’s Comodo Firewall like with wifi networks??? As long as the Firewall settings have been set to allow the full range, the wireless should work fine, my wireless laptop has no problems detecting it .
