638418 2008-02-08 05:15:00 If you want to do ping tests there is a Network Utility APP in Applications.

To set it up for Ethernet go to the apple menu/system preferences/network
Where it has Show - select Built in ethernet
Select TCP/IP tab - Configure IPV4 - Select Using DHCP
Select Ethernet tab and make sure Configure automatically is selected.

Thats all, easy as.
Stay out of terminal window , you don't need that.

638419 2008-02-08 05:30:00 Oh dear - I knew the day would come. I have to fix a Mac.

Well not really fix it.

iBook running OS X 10.4.6.

Customer is trying to Install iWork, but apparently it needs an update, too big to download on dial up.

I can't get it on the net. Plug the ethernet cable in, and it gets an IP address etc etc, looks OK, even tried putting Orcon's DNS servers in manually, but no go.

I want to open a terminal window to do some ping tests etc, but, low and behold, the terminal is hiding!

I thought it was in utilities folder, but it isn't. Any ideas, either on why it's not getting on the net, or where the f**k the terminal has gone!

I am still adamant macs are crap, please prove me wrong! :p
If they just want to update iWork08 that is done via Software update in System prefs.

Easier to do it through Apple menu/Software update

He is trying to get a broadband connection working so they don't have to do the update using dialup.

Fair enough. I would have just ticked the iWork related downloads and left the rest. The update should work on either.

The BB connection may require admin password on the router first in order for Safari to connect. I had that happen with Orcon a couple of times.

Agree, I would have just set dialup going and left it all night if necessary.
All updates seem to be quite large these days so if they have a problem with ilife they will have a problem with others as well.
Just did a QT update today which was over 50MB.

I think the iWork update was around 80MB for all 3 apps. I have it.

Update size is 86MB

638424 2008-02-08 10:03:00 Basically in preferences under network make sure ethernet is set to dhcp. Then in Safari if it will not go on line make sure back in network prefences that no proxy servers are setup. Shoukd work. berryb (99)
638425 2008-02-08 11:03:00 Sounds to me like they have been shifting apps or their filesystem is weird.

I'd run Disk Utility (in Utilities folder) and repair permissions and verify the file system is OK. Then just download the 10.4.11 full update for PPC (www.apple.com) and install it. Then once it is sane, use software update to update the other stuff..

The Console app (again in utilities folder) will allow you to see what the log files are saying.

638426 2008-02-08 11:10:00 Must be some kind of mistake, Macs do not have faults.

You must need to get in touch with your inner Apple, Just relax and stare at this image until your eyes glaze over and your brains ooooooze.

638427 2008-02-08 11:54:00 WMG you are back! :)

Yes they are faultless. When people email me about "kernel panics" and lockups, I tell them: just restart the mac and let's not talk about the incident again.
