2008-02-10 01:49:00 | Hi has anyone used either of these and how do you rate? them have a friend who is looking at investing in something like this. www.dlink.com.au www.dlink.com.au

2008-02-10 02:30:00 | I have not used either, but I am looking at getting a NAS device, such as the D-Link DNS 323 you posted. But then I saw the Linksys NAS200 (www-nz.linksys.com) Which is cheaper than the D-Link with the same features except the Linksys only has 10/100 ethernet where as the D-Link has 10/100/1000 ethernet... If it is going to be used as a file server to host important data then I would suggest a 2 bay model and have 2 HDDs in RAID 1 so if out HDD fails, there is an instant backup on hand, just need to replace the dead HDD and the RAID will rebuild.

They're quite expensive (www.ascent.co.nz) for an enclosure, but the technologies there so I guess the price must match. Anyone running FreeNAS (http://www.freenas.org/)? |

2008-02-10 04:03:00 | Hmm, looking into it the D-Link DNS323 might be better than the Linksys NAS200... www.cnet.com.au crunchlife.com EDIT: Sal, the reason I am looking into these type of NAS devices is they don't use a lot of power and are small and can just get pushed into a corner where as a PC running FreeNAS still needs a keyboard and takes up a fair amount of room...

2008-02-10 05:27:00 | Anyone running FreeNAS (http://www.freenas.org/)? Yes, but my fantasies of having a huge amount of storage in my garage (I have an ethernet connection out there - don't we all?) turned to custard as all three of the old PCs that I tried FreeNAS on had shortcomings. Even when I mixed various disks, interface cards etc. I still wasn't satisfied. (The FreeNAS bit was fine) Now my latest fantasy is this baby (www.macpower.com.tw) Digizone are bringing them in in April? - I am frightened to think of the price.
