| 316091 | 2005-01-20 09:52:00 | Hiya I have just tried out web chatting. Voice talk is acceptable with 56k thou not perfect, at night its a bit slower with the traffic I guess. 128k should be ok for voice chat? With video chat I have not tried thou some pple say 256k is not ok, so 512 for that? Just been thinking given we got these wireless broadband solutions wouldn't it be seeable in the future that we see this technology replacing the Telecom and Vodafone data cards? Would you think cellphones and landlines could have this wifi technology (or similar) with them? Nomad. |

I wonder if our home phones (well, near future home phones) are capable of doing it with adsl enabled . . . . . |

I wonder if our home phones (well, near future home phones) are capable of doing it with adsl enabled.....There's already units available for this, about $1000 - $1200 a pair was the going price when I trialled em about 6 months ago: www.vialta.com Quality/performance was actually really good. |

| 316094 | 2005-01-20 10:30:00 | they could have the same performnce, but just remember to have reliable units, the technology to have a laptop quality and broadband quality speed (and reliablity) just isnt quite at the consumer end yet, i believe they are working on fixing the battery issues with high drain devices so that video confrencing and the such is actually worth while. But, tell me, what advantage is it to have video chat in a cellphone? I have a pxt phone, and the novelty wore of after about a month, it drains the battery and uses tonnes of space | Tux (606) | ||
| 316095 | 2005-01-21 03:46:00 | I am thinking that given we got PC Cards for Whoosh broadband wireless internet. That with a laptop we could do voice and video chatting with pple all over the world and its free (after the ISP charges). Would it be possible cellphones, PDA et al.. be able to use this technology to surf the net, check email, play games, video chat using the Wifi or Wireless Broadband approach..... One can also think that our landlines may have this approach more mass in the future, I have read that there are a few items that is linked to ADSL so we can video chat that looks like a normal telephone handset. The rates would fall too, this would allow pple to use it more and not be subjected to these crazy rates. We can make a contact without double thinking about the rates or deciding on how long we should talk for. The current cellphones solutions is just not affordable to surf the odd site and check the odd email. I sold my last PXT fone. I agree the ergonomics is not there for web use unless you have those larger fones. But basing on ergonomics voice and video chatting should be fine. |

| 316097 | 2005-01-21 12:12:00 | no, because they use a different technology, the woosh technology is very high powered signal, much like a cellphone, but the signal strength must be very large to receive an accurate connection, hence the need for a booster aerial. People already use pdas to use wifi to check their e-mails, wi fi runs on the 2.4ghz spectrum but its range is not very far, about 0.5km to each aerial i have seen, hence its unreliablity. the use of free or low cost long distance connections is alreayd there in the VOIP or voice over ip technology, instead of a phone number, its an ip address, much like a server connection. Essential the technology is there, but not in the range and high strength that we would need. | Tux (606) | ||
