639599 2008-02-12 00:16:00 Clicking on a webpage link in an email (shortly after installing a Windows patch recently), I get a prompt to search for an executable rather than just going directly to the default browser and going to the site. (Clicking on email addresses are fine - opens a new message in Outlook.)

I've solved this before following a M$ patch/'fix' but can't for the life of me remember what I did!

Running XP Pro (SP2), Outlook 2003, Opera 9.25 is the default browser...

639600 2008-02-12 00:25:00 Sounds like you need to re-associate the default browser, or its executable in my computer / tools / folder options / file types.

Did you go to Opera's folder and select its exe file, when the prompt came up??

Then see if it worked?

WHAT was the patch you installed? That you think caused the prob?

639601 2008-02-12 00:30:00 Yep - did that - navigated to Opera's exe - all it did was open a new tab: "opera:blank". johcar (6283)
639602 2008-02-12 00:32:00 Not sure which patch is the culprit - it's the first time in several months that I've 'caught-up' with Microsoft Update. Could have been a Windows one or an Outlook one... johcar (6283)
639603 2008-02-12 00:35:00 Thanks Speedy - sorted now. Had to go back to Add/Remove Programs and Set Program Access and Defaults and reset the Default Web Browser under "Custom". johcar (6283)
639604 2008-02-12 00:39:00 No - hang on a minute.... That hasn't worked either... johcar (6283)
639605 2008-02-12 00:58:00 Clicking on a webpage link in an email (shortly after installing a Windows patch recently), I get a prompt to search for an executable

Choose the Browser exe, and tick Always.

639606 2008-02-12 02:11:00 Thanks pctek - but there wasn't an "Always" option.

Now I don't get the prompt, but it just opens a new blank tab and doesn't follow the link to the site....

639607 2008-02-12 03:10:00 Hmm on the Opera forum site, it says to press ctrl-F12 / advanced / tabs.

Tick allow windows with no tab to disable default blank tab?

Sounds back to front to me !

Tick that and try the link again.

Altho, I made Opera the default browser, and sent myself an email with a link in it, with OE and Outlook (the above option is unticked), and it worked.

639608 2008-02-12 03:28:00 Try this - Open IE click tools/Internet Options or go through Control Panel Internet Options, Select the Programs Tab, make IE the default Browser As Shown Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) close all browsers, then try your mail. If it opens in IE thats working as its meant to.

You can then go back to Opera, and make it your default browser. Try the mail again and hopefully it will open in Opera.

Sometimes patches change certain things and settings need to be set back to MS defaults.
