2005-02-01 04:55:00 | It's a shame that Bruce thought fit to lock the "What's up with Big Brother?" (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) thread as, personally, I thought Ninja raised a very good point regarding "banned words" that I have been musing over recently myself. As it appears that I have got Bruce's back up over my comment regarding Chilling Silence having an avatar, I would like to clarify some things. Firstly, I am glad that avatars will not be implemented on the forum as I find them annoying, hence my comment regarding switching them off. Secondly, I couldn't care less whether the moderators have avatars for the reason given, though it would have been nice to have seen an annoucement rather than them just appear out of the blue. It would also have looked more professional if the avatars were standardised official "Press F1 moderator badges" though, because as it is now it is going to confuse a lot of new and/or infrequent visitors to the forum who are going to be asking how come those select few can have them but not the rest of the members. As for the moderators giving their time freely to keeping the forum running smoothly, Jen is doing a fantastic job and deserves all the support she can get. Regarding the filtration of inappropriate words I have to agree with Ninja that it is ridiculous how some offensive words, eg s h * t, c**t and W T F are banned but not crap, twat or ***. A lot of the words Ninja listed could and should be added to the filter list as even though we are all supposed to be "mature" there will always be plenty who don't find anything wrong with using such language on a public family forum. My comments are offered as constructive criticism, not as a whinge or a test of the admin's patience. Feel free to delete the post if you don't like it. :D

You may be happy in your circle with rough language, which is OK. but in a common forum keep it straightforward. Rough language does not add anything to the value of the traffic. |

2005-02-01 06:03:00 | Sorry that there wasn't an "official" announcement, but as we are currently down to one webteam member (i.e. me) out of two it was a busy day, and I got called to do something else urgently just as I turned this feature on for mods. You'll notice that I have kept the badges standard - cept Bruce's cos the chimp hijacked his... As for the "bad word" filter, I tend to agree with Bruce - this is first and foremost a tech help forum, and we are all adults. We never implemented a filter list as we didn't feel the need, so if words are filtered out its likely its been used wrongly and we've added it. We may not be able to please everybody all the time, but we try our best.

2005-02-01 06:13:00 | Not for the Russians I believe, oops that was 1812,Terry can tell us about the overture :D Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky "1812" Overture in E Flat Major Op. 49 (1880) A bit before my time. To celebrate the ahem victory of the Russians over the French at Borodino, well described in "War and Peace", except that 44,000 Russians were killed and 33,000 French. But it meant eventual defeat for the French and the retreat from Moscow, a lesson that Hitler forgot. Now to hear the cannons tune in here: telmedia.telarc.com:8080 It runs for 15 minutes.

2005-02-01 06:37:00 | I don't know about anyone else, but I'd much rather express myself with an avatar than 1 stupid line of text (That wonderful little custom rank). Turn the custom ranks of and poof! No more users pretending to be mods | Edward (31) | |
2005-02-01 06:52:00 | Or.....just take it with a chuckle, as that is all it deserves. Getting upset over a user having banned as a title is just redicules, and no one was decieved by the one who named himself moderator (and has since removed it) The would has enough mountains, lets leave the molehills as they are.
