318356 2005-01-26 10:23:00 just a little something for you to chew over.......

we have had a bit of fun trying to by a certain product. we checked most of the major shops for it (theres not many in auck) but they didn't have it in stock, so we asked them if they could order it in. "no problem" <cough> <yeah right> after much discussion we found they wern't interested in odering it in. the cost of transport would nearly double the price so they have to order in bulk which they didn't want to do as they already had a dozen different brands on the shelf (but not the product i need). much they same story at the other shops :(. now normally you can't buy from the importer but we tracked em down and managed to buy some (much to the horror of the retailers).

the reason given by some of the retailers.."to much choice in the market" theres simply to many brands advailable so uncomman products are not stocked. eg they can have 2 brands of everything or 6 brands of only the comman stuff. mmmm.......more customer choice = less advailable to buy...werid !

i've noticed it in other markets to (pc included) where there is a large range of brands advailable but not much range to choice from.

318358 2005-01-26 19:13:00 It sucks from a customer perspective, but trust me, there is legitimate reason why they do this. I come from an IT distribution background, and we often had issues with this, because one customer wanting one item simply isn't cost effective unless you know there is a demand. Especially when importing goods, with the high cost of shipping and often the need to buy in bulk, there is too much risk. IT products depreciate in value very quickly, and there is a lot of money to be lost in these cases.

I remember when DVD writers first came out (pre retail), and one customer of ours wanted one as part of a storage system. We had to order a mininum of 50 units at roughly $2000 a piece if we wanted one. For a large IT company, that may be no problem at all, but for a small business it's a huge risk of being left out of pocket.

They aren't just doing it to annoy you :)

318359 2005-01-27 05:01:00 sory can't say what the product was as the retailers may boycot the wholesaler :(

yeah its a pain...the importer/wholesaler has gone to the expencive of bringing the products in, there is customer demand for it but no retailer wants to buy it or sell it simply because there is so many competing elcheapo crap brands advaiable (but none that match this particular product).
