2005-01-26 18:23:00 | A quick look on the DSE site (Home Electronics) reveals that batteries for Uniden cordless phones tend to be around $25. I'm not sure how long they would last or if they would give better performance than standard batteries. As for frequencies, I would personally stay away from 2.4GHz because it is a public frequency and is subject to interference from microwaves, wireless access points, and other devices. Note that people here have said their phones work fine on the 2.4GHz frequency so long as the phone detects that there is another device using a particular channel (however I do believe you can set some APs to use more than one channel and achieve greater speed). If anything try and get a 900MHz or 5.8GHz phone, but that's only me being idealistic.

2005-01-26 20:22:00 | Anyone have any opinion on the Doro brand?, I see GF gave them the thumbs up. The built in answer phone sounds the go, and unfortunately few of the models on the DSE site are available in Wanganui... Anyhow,Doro Dect Cordless Phone/Answering Machine 5045 is what i have my eye on (sure is ugly though)

2005-01-26 20:54:00 | Metla - I have no experience with the model you are looking at, but here's another totally useless suggestion re a criterion for selecting your phone! Are you the kind of person who cradles the phone between shoulder and ear when you are talking? If so, some of these little DECT phones (I think the one you are referring to for example) aren't much use like that. It is like trying to cradle a cell phone... I can just do it with the Uniden WDECT 2310 I have, but the phones I bought my daughter and son in law would be impossible. I use the speaker built into the WDECT 2310 (or a headset) when I need both hands free. Just an ever so minor thought, but it is one of those irritating little things that sometimes only occur to you when you have left the shop... John

2005-01-26 21:07:00 | Uniden XS610 - simpler model, no noise, works just fine. Batteries have gone OK for several years..... I'd get another one .... | TonyF (246) | |
2005-01-26 22:04:00 | The DORO 5045 is what I have (I have the pair). Quality seems very good. Too many features though, never use many of them. The answer phone is good, but unused now (call minder). It works at individual phone level, so can be turned on and off with ease. Ringing options are a bit "musical" but I don't find them annoying which is useful, and would be useful in a shop as well.

2005-01-27 00:47:00 | Once again,Thanks for all the input. Been down to Dick Smith, Looked at a couple models,Due to my budget and the fact i wanted answer phone capabilities only 2 phones were in the running and the Doro style just didn't apeal. So I consulted the salesman(had to call him over from a group of 5 salesmen of them who were discussing age of empires) about the exact model, wanting to confirm that it had the features i was looking for....at which time he got all smug and mocking (where did he think he was,on a forum?), I swear if i had the energy i would have leaped on the counter then dropped a flying elbow on him, It only got worse when I confirmed i would take one as long as it wasn't a display model, Idiots pointing out the obvious in stupid voices need to be body slammed....AND,i purchased a ream of paper, Told him 3 times i did not want the one with the ripped packaging, .........arrrrgghhh................I had to stop and just accept it as I was far to close to losing my temper. (things go from bad to worse when i spit the dummy) So overall,Once again regretting heading into Dick Smith, but i got a phone.
