318160 2005-01-26 01:33:00 I see IHUG is offering a free modem & connection worth about $200 to switch to a Blink (broadband) plan for signup by 31Mar. This seems to me to be a good enticement to move off dialup to ADSL.

A couple of questions come to mind:
1. In order to determine what plan to go for, what could an average household expect to use in data transfer over a month? We dont have any gaming etc.

2. Once with ADSL, does the action of firing up the browser make the connection, or are you always connected as long as the 'puter and ADSL modem are on (irrespective of the browser being loaded/activated)?

Any help much appreciated.

318161 2005-01-26 01:50:00 I signed up with Bliink just before xmas. Got a free installation, but had to buy a modem. I signed up for the unlimited plan. Had no idea how much I'd use so thought I'd play safe. It's only another $10 per month.
Quite happy with it. No complaints.

318163 2005-01-26 02:29:00 Yeah I know that ... just need answers to the original question which will then help me determine what plan to get. Cptn Hotshot (3904)

This varies widely. There isn't really such a thing as an "average household". Do you download music? Watch streaming media? Update numerous Windows PC's?

This is modem specific. Some work like a dialup modem (USB usually) and others (the majority) operate like a LAN connection which is considered always on.

318165 2005-01-26 03:15:00 Ninja, thanks for the input. A bit of music is downloaded but other than that just surfing to sites of interest such as BBC, CNN and bit and pieces and email. Odd freebee programs downloaded/updated etc eg AVG7, Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, Firewall. Am currently running Win98SE so no updates here but might get and move to XP at some stage.

As far as the modem is concerned, they are offering a D-Link DSL-200 is an ADSL modem that provides USB connectivity, so are you always connected as long as the 'puter and ADSL modem are on (irrespective of the browser being loaded/activated)? Understand also that the data cap measure include both download/upload as well ... true?

Indication of other member's usage would be a help, particularly if IHUG customers on ADSL.

Just keep a close eye on it as it's easy to go over.

Understand also that the data cap measure include both download/upload as well ... true?Yes.

Indication of other member's usage would be a help, particularly if IHUG customers on ADSL.Again this is a red herring. iHug or which ISP is ireelevant, but no ones usage is going to reflect yours. I pull somewhere around 40-80GB a month on average, my parents use around 300MB, my grandparents use 2GB. It is a huge variable and relying on other people's info isn't likely to help.

Also make sure your machines are 100% virus and spyware free before going on ADSL.

Understand also that the data cap measure include both download/upload as well ... true?If your USB modem and computer are both on, then you are "online" regardless of having a web browser open. This is why it is very important to have a well configured firewall installed. There are also quite a few other programs that connect out to the internet in the background, checking for updates etc, so the firewall can control this and let you have the say to which program can have internet access. Data usage includes upstream (eg sending emails) and downstream traffic.

Indication of other member's usage would be a help, particularly if IHUG customers on ADSL.As already mentioned, this can be very user dependent, and you will find once you have ADSL you will download more than before, just because everything is so fast and easy. If you tend to view news sites such as CNN, then they can be graphic intensive and if you watch their video clips often, this will also eat into your data allowance.

You will probably find the 1 gig plan too limiting, but if you do go over, your speed will be capped until the end of the billing period. The 4 gig plan gives you more leeway, but half of that data usage can only be used between midnight-8am. If you are unsure, you can always pick the 4 gig plan and then see how you go with it over a couple of months and then change to a different plan if that is not suitable (check with Ihug first about this).
