640246 2008-02-14 07:41:00 I have a question

A friend of mine is using my wireless. She was willing to give $10 and I told her she could use 10GB of data each month

But I still want to make sure if she is obedient and does use 10GB.Even if she uses a little more say up to 20GB then thats ok because its $10 its not alot we are friends after all

But anyway..I still wanna be careful and not end up with an expensive bill.I want to know if she is actually sticking to 10GB so I was wondering if there are any softwares out there that can detect how much data is coming out of my wireless? The software will be of course installed on my computer

My wireless is encrypted of course with a 64 bit wep key + Mac address filtering.

The modem is in my room and I am directly connected to my modem.

Anyone know of any software out there?

From beeswax34's sig - monitors usage by physical network adapter, so I don't see why it wouldn't work with a wireless adapter . . . . Anyone tried it?

It detects the wireless adaptor on my computer but not the network's wireless .

The wireless is built into her laptop . The software only applies to the computer you install it on .

I need one where it detects how much she uses not how much i use .

640249 2008-02-14 08:31:00 That kind of thing would probably have to be built into the router's firmware .

If you always leave your PC on, you could set that up for internet connection sharing and use your wireless card on your PC as an access point (I think you'd have to remain wired to your router) . That's kinda messy though .

Netmeter, which I run (and is similar to Tautology) has an alarm you can set for when you reach your limit . It may be easiest to have the software installed on her computer and then just trust her to obey it .

640251 2008-02-14 08:44:00 Er, that's a bit cryptic, but I think it's only showing packets up and down and speed, not accumulated data. wiselark (12849)
640252 2008-02-14 09:42:00 Another thought is if your ISP has an online usage meter, you could track your own usage and deduct it from the total the ISP provides to work out what she has used. wiselark (12849)
640253 2008-02-14 09:53:00 How about installing DD-WRT firmware on your router. I'm pretty sure it has some features that could help you out.

You're right though, the program in my sig can only monitor her activity if its installed on HER computer so thats a no go.

EDIT: You can also install Tomato firmware on your modem. Looks like it can definitely help you.

While I'm not sure if any of those firmwares support your particular router, there is no danger in running either of them. I think a no. of people on PressF1 run DD WRT and I used to run an old version of Tomato on one of my old routers.

The functionality and ease of use is actually stunning. But just giving you options, not sure how comfortable you are with changing firmwares. You could always reload the OEM firmware if you don't like the alternatives.
