640087 2008-02-14 01:35:00 I have MS Office 2003 installed and I can't open documents sent from MS Office 2007. Has anyone installed the compatibility pack?. It appears that it can present some problems?. Pato (2463)
640088 2008-02-14 02:08:00 Installed it on many PC's with no worries.

The only time I personally have had any troubles is when the PC in question was underpowered, Eg: low spec XP, and then they struggled to open / convert the documents.

640089 2008-02-14 03:24:00 Nope, there are no problems at all with the Compatibility pack here. Its worked great, even on an under-powered XP laptop though as WT said, it takes some time. beeswax34 (63)

That is encouraging. I read that one has to have the PC up-to-date with all the MS downloads?. Is this correct?. I don't install all the MS updates.

Have you religiously installed all the MS updates?.

640092 2008-02-14 03:40:00 No problems here either - might pay to check your file associations to make sure .docx files (for example) are set to open with Word 2003, .XLSX with Excel etc.

I have seen installations that appear to have installed correctly, but when installed, one or more component of Office (Outlook for example) was still running.

640094 2008-02-14 04:45:00 In Office Word 2007 you have to save your file as word 97/2003. This will produce a .doc file. Some of the time it will change it to .DOCX. Word 2003 cannot read DOCX files. You will have to buy Word 2007..
I know this is maddening to say the least. MS at it again.. darroll

According to this (www.microsoft.com)

The high-priority updates have to be installed, before this is installed

With the free compatibility pack, Word 2003 can both read DOCX files and save new files as DOCX. You don't need to buy 2007 unless you specifically want the extra formatting and features.

I've installed the compatibility pack on both Office 2000 and Office 2003 with no problems.
