639930 2008-02-13 20:09:00 Not exactly a puter query but my partner has a pretty old sewing machine with a very hard to read LCD screen.(it is all pretty dark with no contrasts)All I want to know is.Is replacement the only possible solution or could it be repaired ? kjaada (253)
639931 2008-02-13 20:43:00 Faulty LCD screens usually have to be replaced, in my experience. rumpty (2863)
639932 2008-02-13 21:57:00 I sort of expected that but how many things do we take to "an expert" without any
way of knowing if a very simple diode or something was all that needed replacement
but we are billed for a major repair.

639933 2008-02-13 22:04:00 Depends what youre doing when it goes dark.

I know with videos or when I watch a DVD / TV using the ATI videocard / drivers, I have to change it from Custom to Home in the settings.

Otherwise, the DVD/video is too dark to watch.

Once you pull the whole thing apart, they are actually pretty similar.

639935 2008-02-13 23:16:00 Has the screen's visibility degraded over time, or has it always been dark? Are we talking about a backlit LCD or a reflective one?

It's possible that it's simply a component (possibly just a resistor) has slowly deteriorated & it happens to be the one controlling the LCD contrast. We use simple alphanumeric LCD's here, & there can be a huge difference in readability made just by tweaking the contrast voltage a tad - it doesn't take too much to go unreadable on the dark side.

You know, the question was about the LCD screen on an old sewing machine. Try watching a DVD on that
