321128 2005-02-03 10:04:00 We have been given a Box. Probably the most useful thing in it is a power cord for a computer but one never knows.

Amongst the contents is a Pioneer AVIC-X77 GPS that came out of an imported car from Japan. In all likelyhood it would be extremely useful if it contained a map of Tokyo - and we lived in Tokyo. However it doesn't and we don't.

Does anyone know anything about these things? Can one get maps for NZ? Or a wiring diagram so one can test it?

Searches on the web have come up with one on Trade me, a few other ones on international auction sites and some links to Japanese pages which translate in a rather peculiar manner.

I'm not at all sure if we could find a use for it if we could get it working - no one tends to read maps in this household at the best of times - but it seems too nice a toy to consign to the dump.

Anyone with any ideas?

321130 2005-02-03 20:41:00 Sounds like a neat little toy to have. :)

Was reading a car review in the paper the other day which mentioned that one model (can't remember what car it was now) came with a GPS map doofus thingy complete with NZ maps so they must be around. How about paying a little visit to your local friendly car dealer (one who sells expen$ive car$) and quizzing them about it? You might need to pretend you want to buy one of their cars but I'm sure you would manage that, no sweat. :D

321132 2005-02-03 21:25:00 The map files tend to be proprietary to the GPS unit I believe.

Otherwise issues of incorrect scale etc would make the units a danger more than a help.

321133 2005-02-03 23:25:00 ... I'm sure you would manage that, no sweat.
ME? ... Lie? ... Tut, tut.

Well I thought up two scenarios:
1. Give it to my Future-Son-In-Law and ask him to figure out the wiring with his cousin the Auto Electrician
2. Email Pioneer - (thanks Johnboy, I couldn't find their web site - pioneer.com brought up an Australian grain site and all the others were Japanese. What search term did you use?) and ask for help.

The info site was interesting. It looks like if no maps are available I could use it once to find out where I am, say "Cool" ... and put it away in the cupboard for future dumping. Or something.

Off to email now.

321134 2005-02-04 04:29:00 When plugged in, it will beep three times and in pleasantly accented tones say: "You are lost". In Japanese.

I've got a programme for the Palm series which when run draws a big "X" on the screen, with a caption: "You are here". It's far more accurate than the GPS system.

321135 2005-02-04 05:01:00 I have all the maps for NZ, in a laptop program. When the program is run, it recognises a GPS plugged into the serial port and scrolls the map keeping your "location" in the center of the screen. Quite fun to use.

Not suitable for use when driving though, as "windows" would get broken.

321136 2005-02-04 05:09:00 The unit may give latitude and longitude readout, which is really not of much use on land. OK if you have an ocean going car and use sea charts  You need New Zealand Map Grid coordinate format, which most GPS units have nowadays.

I would presume the readout is in Japanese? But if menus are in English then you may be able to do something with it.

If you get no joy from the US Pioneer site, Mapworld may be able to tell you if it it useable here, though they stock primarily Garmin products.

321137 2005-02-04 05:44:00 I emailed Pioneer at lunchtime. No response as yet.

In order for the thing to tell me that I am lost the first requirement is to plug it in.

We have a 12 volt adaptor with lighter plug for the useless car frig so can possibly test it indoors.

There are 5 wires:
1. Red
2. Black
3. Orange/White
4. Yellow
5. Pink

Presumably red is +ve, black is -ve, orange/white is +ve for standby but yellow?? pink??

Any clues?
