| 322999 | 2005-02-11 00:29:00 | What is the latest on HDTV here in NZ ? The latest New Scientist magazine shows that High Definition TV sales are booming in Europe, even though only about 10% of the HDTV owners actually get HDTV broadcasting. The article also stated that many owners of large screen TVs are disappointed with the resolution (presumably if they are not getting HDTV broadcasts.) I have a 29 in flat TV, and compared the picture size with a Wide Screen Sanyo TV in a shop - the difference was neglible, to my surprise (comparing a DVD film wide format on my 29 inch - was only a bit longer on the Sanyo but not worth it). If it was me, buying a larger screen TV, I would sit for quite awhile in the showrooms, comparing the pictures on various TVs. But if you have heaps of money to throw around, then just go out an blow it... although it would be advisable to get a "return to store if not satisfied within a week or two". |

According to the article, SKY in the UK are releasing an HDTV channel soon. I imagine the first step is to get widespread free-to-air digital TV going in NZ. I head a rumour that TVNZ are releasing a few satellite channels soon. Whether the digital network will go via satellite or terrestrial is being debated. I doubt much will happen for a few years yet, and I don't know whether the government here have set a date for switching off analogue signals yet. The US and UK are aiming to do that within the next 2 or 3 years I hear. |

You can zoom up or down & you don't have to see those annoying channel symbols. Some DVD viewing does have that letterbox effect but it depends on what format was used at the time of filming & whether or not the DVD has the options of choosing viewing formats. It took a bit of getting used to but now I wouldn't go back. Pauline. |
