640306 2008-02-14 09:02:00 I brought a new Linksys WRT150N wireless n router
it connected through an XP PC to Telstra broadband 4mb conection
this computer connects fine, both local and internet
XP PC not using wireless its the base PC and is using a network cable.

But my laptop Vista home premium / Intel wirless WiFi Link 4965agn wireless card
only connects at reasonable speeds 130 Mbps without any security set
but once I use WEP which is all Vista seems to understand it cut right back to
54Mbps :mad:

Any one know the right settings for these routers
and how I can keep my wireless network safe,
can I turn the encryption off and protect it some other way

640307 2008-02-14 10:04:00 Hmm, you could always just have MAC address filtering on and stop broadcasting your SSID but this is really not safe as your Mac address can be spoofed and its relatively easy to find hidden networks.

I dont know why Vista wont let you access full 130Mbps though. Its a quandary (for now atleast) between speed and security and I'd go for security anyday.

1) Whats the wireless network mode? eg:

* mixed
* b-only
* g-only

2) Perhaps its a limitation with the wireless card? Have you looked at the spec's for it?

3) Also try upgrading the firmware on the wireless router if not that then the drivers for the wireless card .

4) Have you tried using WPA / WPA2?

If your linksys router has the same interface as mine you will have the following :-

4) Check under advanced wireless settings, under the main wireless tab for what the transmission speed is set to, maybe force it to the highest speed (default is auto)

5) Try resetting the router to defaults, you might of changed something by accident!

If all above fails, I would suggest looking into it from a Windows Vista viewpoint, maybe a limitation of some sort (shouldn't be though!)

My recommendation is not to run the wireless box without encryption of some sort, WPA is a recommended lowest setting in my books .
MAC's can be "spoofed" and hidden networks can be detected
In saying that, someone *really* has to want to be on your network for some reason, the inexperienced computer person would take a long time to work out how to get around it all .

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on :)

640309 2008-02-16 04:28:00 I had a similar problem with an Intel wireless card on a new XP laptop - whenever I turned encryption on the speed dropped dramatically. After trying many settings, I found updating the Intel driver for the wireless card fixed it completely. wiselark (12849)
640310 2008-02-18 07:21:00 Thanks for your help, been away
I tried all your good sugestions with no luck
next I will be loading the wireless router from my Vista machine next to see if the new system sets it it better but i wont hold my breath.
Also I was hoping the update for Vista will come with better encryption options.

640311 2008-02-18 07:30:00 Oh and yes I'm using the encyption, I live in a dodge hood, but I plug a network cable in to play games as that set the rate at 100mps which is enough.
I will let you know if i find the solution.

640312 2008-02-18 22:43:00 I think you may find its due to the fact you are using different manufacture products, intel and linksys, i would check the linksys site for troubleshooting as most lappys wont have linksys chipsets for wireless so it maybe a known issue! SolMiester (139)
640313 2008-02-18 23:51:00 Don't get side-tracked with worrying about Vista. It won't be a Vista problem per se. linw (53)
