322095 2005-02-06 21:39:00 This morning I tried to purchase a DVD from Total DVD in Australia - the DVD is unobtainable in NZ .

Everything went fine using my credit card over the web . The order was accepted, then I received this email from them:
---------------------------------------
Dear (my name),

As a result of problems we have been experiencing recently with international orders, we must ask you to either FAX, POST or SCAN and E-MAIL through:

a Signed confirmation of your purchase order
a copy of your credit card statement featuring your name, address and credit card details
documented proof of your signature (ie . photocopy of driver's licence or a photocopy of the front and back of your credit card) .

Providing they show proof of signature, as well as confirmation of the card details and delivery address supplied on the order, please note we will accept any 2, 3 or 4 pieces of documentation listed above as enough to verify your account . However, if the cardholder's name does not match yours, we will need:

a signed authority from the actual cardholder approving the purchase of the products listed below on their card
proof of signature (ie . photocopy of the cardholder's driver's licence or credit card)
copies of any official documents featuring the cardholder's personal and credit card details (ie . credit card statement) .

We apologise for any inconvenience, but it is absolutely necessary that you follow these procedures if you wish us to proceed with processing and shipping your order .

The good news is once you have verified your details with us, you will not need to go through this procedure with us again, unless your credit card and/or address details change

Our mailing address is:

Total DVD
106 King Street,
Newtown,
Sydney, NSW,
Australia 2042

Our Fax no is:

+612 9517 1906

We look forward to hearing from you and appreciate your assistance with this matter .
Please respond urgently .

Regards,
Customer Service

Needless to say, I cancelled the order, but one wonders what travels my credit card number are going to go on now . . .

Thought you may like to consider the wisdom of purchasing from this firm .

322096 2005-02-06 22:21:00 Why not ring your bank? If they approve it then it is on their heads. If they have doubts - run. Mercury (1316)
322097 2005-02-06 23:05:00 Keep them at 1 & 1/2 bargepole length.

Did you check the url to make sure it's not a phishing attempt?

322098 2005-02-06 23:28:00 These sorts of requests are not actually that bad. I've had it requested from a company in NZ even.

If it were someone from Nigeria, I'd run a mile, but given it's in Australia, I'd advise your bank / or speak to them to see if there is an alternative?

Why not give them a call to see if you can smooth out their concerns?

Lo.

322099 2005-02-06 23:50:00 Thanks for your thoughts . I found the firm by doing a google search for DVD suppliers, because I could not get the DVD I wanted from any of my usual NZ suppliers (I want "Ivan the Terrible" by director Eisenstein) .

The firm did (do?) seem kosher, but I was really put off by that approach .

The url I got from google was: . totaldvd . com . au/shopping/shoppingkart . asp" target="_blank">www . totaldvd . com . au

The url for "About us" is: . totaldvd . com . au/biz/aboutus . asp" target="_blank">www . totaldvd . com . au

I may get my daughter who lives in Sydney to check them out . I notice they have a store where she could pick up the DVDs for me, so I may do it that way, God willing (my daughter is God) .

Thanks again .

322100 2005-02-07 04:09:00 I just received an email from that firm (after I sent them a somewhat assertive, no, rude) email cancelling the order. Here is what they said:

Dear Sir / Madam
The email you should have received is generated automatically by our system for all first time international customers. However, as you are so close by in New Zealand, we do tend to make exceptions with our NZ clients, Where it is possible for us to verify the name and address details independently – such as with the NZ white pages. I have indeed found such a listing for you and so am now updating your account as verified. We will now process your pending order. All future orders on this account will now go through automatically. Regards, Ms K**** E****** www.totaldvd.com.au

So I guess they are kosher after all. Thought I should set the record straight in case I put people off doing business with them. I think that credit card system may be ok if you are there with them in the flesh and can take your documents away with you, but I don't accept it is reasonable over the net given what could be done with those materials in unscrupulous hands.

Thanks for your opinions!

John

322101 2005-02-07 05:00:00 The request for confirmation of details is pretty common and pretty good really - they could just as easily take the money no questions asked. Taking your business away from someone that has GOOD business practices - what a great idea. ninja (1671)

If the bank pays out the money I fail to see the risk for the crowd in Oz.
I buy stuff from USA and have not had to do any such thing.Bugger em I say and there good business practise. :groan:

322103 2005-02-07 08:08:00 Somewhat simliar to some NZ companies. First time I ordered from Ascent I got a phone call from them to make sure I was me.
They now have my details on secure file so if I want something I just send an e-mail. Works well.

322104 2005-02-07 08:22:00 If the bank pays out the money I fail to see the risk for the crowd in Oz.Because the owner of the credit card can cancel or reverse the transaction should it be lost or stolen and not yet reported.

At that stage, said company has already shipped $x worth of product to some address which they can't recall.
