322061 2005-02-06 10:34:00 Hey,

The car is a 1992 Toyota Corrola 1.6L 4-cylendar station wagon.

When we were trying to find the 'brain' of our car alarm and destroy it (we want to get it so that the central locking works, but so alarm is gone. But can't find the controller for it). The alarm is permantly brain damaged, does cary things..... But I want to get the central locking back (they are kind of one unit). One day we were driving along (alarm off of course) and it locked all 4 doors and immobilised the engine. Sometimes it goes off for no reason when it wasn't even on, when we're driving. So we pulled the fuse.

Annnyway, I noticed that the fuse marked ECU-1G had a fuse missing (10A). It IS connected though, to something. Their is also a 7.5A "ECU-B" fuse which is in.

Is this like, a disconnected ECU for some reason? And does it have anything possibly to do with this:

When our timing ****ed up (cam-belt tensioning wrong), and the toyota shop were repairing it, driving up the hill in third gear (as we had several other times that day just fine), this time it couldn't do it. It was decellerating quite fast. We changed to 2nd, and foot right down but STILL it was decellerating. We had to drive up this road in first gear with pretty heavy throttle to get up it. Before it did it in 3rd effortlessly.

Perhaps the guy had tried resetting / disconnecting the ECU using that fuse, and forgot to putting it back? Or am I speaking total bollocks and the lack of power was a shoddy timing job on his part?

Our 0-100KM speed was around ten seconds before this, now around 14 :(

Thanks in advance.

322062 2005-02-06 10:59:00 Too many variables, take it back to the mechanic. I'd be surprised if someone could diagnose this based on a post here.

As to the alarm, it won't have come standard in a 92 Corolla. Go to an alarm agent.

322063 2005-02-06 11:06:00 Indeed it was not standard - the alarm company went bust about 3 years ago.

And all I need to know is, is the ECU-1G fuse for the ECU or something unrelated like Electric Cooling Unit...

Edit: And as to take it back to the mechanic: I don't think we want to drive up to Napiar...... (this was on a holiday).

322064 2005-02-06 20:27:00 www.google.com define:ECU

Electronic Control Unit
www.trinituner.com/glossary.htm

Electronic control unit; another name for an automotive computer.
www.oneleft.net/Automtive_Definitions_And_Definitions_For_Automoti ve_Parts_A_F.htm

Acronym for "electronic Control Unit"

Anyway I said go to AN alarm agent, rather than THE alarm agent.

Psychic ability was waning yesterday, assumed the mechanic would be nearby (logically) so take to A mechanic rather than THE mechanic.

322065 2005-02-06 23:31:00 Actually the ECU is the Engine Control Unit as well.

It sounds like that fuse may well supply essential services to the ECU, as clearly some sensors are not functioning by the performance you suggest. Probably the fuse also supplies the "permanent live" to the alarm. Hence it was removed to "fix" the problem, but has semi crippled the car.

I would not take it to a mechanic though, but to an Auto Electrician.
