| 641809 | 2008-02-18 23:11:00 | I have just quietened my machine (Vista OS) a bit and then noticed that a drive was cycling down then within a minute coming back to speed again . This went on continuously . Bit of a worry! I have tracked down where the problem lies . I have my paging file on a drive other than the C: drive . This drive doesn't get used much, except by the paging system . My power settings have the hard drives spool down after 20 min . It seems that the power manager has shut the drive down but the paging system does not reset the 20 min shutdown counter . So the paging file gets accessed, requiring a spool up then after the access the drive spools down again . That's my theory, anyway . If I set my drives to never shutdown, I don't get the problem . (And if my system is noisy I don't get the problem:)) . Most paging files are on the C: drive so this doesn't happen . It would be interesting to hear if there are any of you with similar setups to mine to see whether it is just my system that does this . (I've tried googling but it is hard to get a useful enquiry!) . Lindsay . |

Must be a problem in Vista as I never had the problem when I ran XP on the same box. Don't know if there has been a fix for it or not as I have since changed the PC and it only has one HDD now. |
