The family computer used by my family has been suffering great memory problems. Each time the computer is turned on it talks of a critically low amount of disk space (D:/). Cleaning the drive has very little effect. There are no particularly special programs - basic things like Media Player, Internet Explorer, Java and Flash (etc, etc) are all that are currently on the computer, and yet only a range of 41MB (86MB if lucky) remain on the 4GB Hard Drive (D:/), yo-yoing depending on cleaning the disk. It takes half an hour waiting for the computer to clean the disk, but this is not what I've noticed.
Directly under 'D:/WINDOWS' are an awful lot of odd floating file folders (164, to be exact). In a solid blue colour (<font color="#0000ff">THIS</font> colour if the forum allows HTML). They are floating uselessly and do not appear to be connected to anything of any kind. Here's an example of some of the things the folders are called (although they all follow a similar pattern):
$NtUninstallKB835732$
$NtUninstallKB837001$
$NtUninstallKB873339_0$
$NtUninstallKB889293-IE6SP1-20041111.235619$
...and the list goes on. They nearly all contain the same thing: a subfolder labeled 'spunist' (everything still in blue) and a variety of other things.
Now, obviously, it would not be prudent to just go deleting files in the WINDOWS folder, even if backed up (as the computer might not work to let me put them back again). The names suggest it is all for uninstalling some kind of program or update, yet what that is is a mystery - I have no problems looking through the WINDOWS folder and this is the first time these sorts of things have ever been visable.
Although I would not call myself the technological expert, I know that viruses, spyware, etc etc are perfectly capable of having official sounding names so that people browsing will leave them alone. To avoid the computer blowing up in a nasty fireball (or just stop working which, although less dramatic, is intensely more frustrating) do you have any advice on what can be done to solve the problem?
Caroline Jones

(PS: The OS is Windows XP (and/or Windows 2000) and I'm afraid I do not know the other details like RAM, clock speed etc etc. The computer is also an unused borrowed one so I cannot say how old it is... my apologies.)

641000 2008-02-17 04:00:00 You can use something like ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com)

Install it then run it. Then tick hotfix uninstallers. Under the cleaner tab.

This will then remove those folders starting with $NtUninstall (and the files in them).

This should give you about 200 mb or so free space.

You just wont be able to uninstall the Windows updates in add/remove programs, if you want to (thats what those folders are for).

Ccleaner will also delete temp files etc. It will also remove cookies etc, you have to close the browser/s youre using for it to do this.

The blue coloured files are compressed files (well, thats if its the same as XP).

Its full.

You need to actually uninstall stuff.

They are updates.

You could:

Turn off System Restore.
Add/Remove things you don't need.
Get a bigger hard drive.

641002 2008-02-17 04:17:00 The fact that they are updates means installing them may not be wise (thanks pctek) I don't know what 'hotfix' is, and, once again, this is a borrowed computer so it is not permitted to install 'ccleaner' (unfortunately), or get a bigger hard drive.
But I guess this means that there's really nothing that can be done without actually altering the computer itself, so thank you for the info. :)

641003 2008-02-17 04:24:00 A hotfix is just a patch / update that microsoft bring out to fix whatever. Speedy Gonzales (78)
641004 2008-02-17 05:43:00 Just a thought, you mention D drive. IS there a C drive somewhere? That's normally the main hard drive. the_bogan (9949)
641005 2008-02-17 07:47:00 well i'd install ccleaner ANYWAY and then run it as it's one of the BEST possible and easiest to use drive cleaning programs.........THEN when its done its little thing........UNINSTALL it..........who's to know ? drcspy (146)
641006 2008-02-17 09:32:00 Well having XP AND 2000 can also take space because there are installations for 2 OS.

If this is the case, maybe you should think about taking 2000 out. BUT you need to run CCleaner! Like drcspy said, who's to know once you un-install it.

 Well...that was a waste of time. Just install CCleaner, run it and uninstall it. No one will know, or care.
