| 325877 | 2005-02-17 07:51:00 | New Scientist is running a series of artcles about India, and its rise to be the next knowledge superpower. An op-ed is here (www.newscientist.com), and an interview with an Infosys spokesman is here (www.newscientist.com). There are many more examples than I will bother to link, of large, well-known multinational companies contracting out work to Indian firms, in everything from customer services to R&D. Clearly, these are not short-term activities and India will benefit greatly. But I wonder, what will it take for New Zealand to become a knowledge superpower? New Zealanders arguably have much better English communciations than Indians, and socially and culturally are much closer to other Western countries than Indians are. The New Zealand infrastructure is much better too. However, New Zealand does not have as low a cost of highly skilled labour, but this cannot be the only unfavourable factor. If it is a major factor, why don't New Zealanders do anything about it? |

If you can't be bothered looking after yourself & your family others will do it for you There is no survival of the fittest anymore (a basic law of nature) It's way past time Nz'ers took a long hard look at themselves and planned for the future as many other countries are doing If we keep going the way we are we will soon become one of the "developing nations", certainly not a powerhouse of knowledge. We need a major attitude change if we are to keep pace with the rest of the world |

Remove the welfare state i reckon, and increase the health care.Mix in some tax cuts and..... |

| 325884 | 2005-02-17 17:01:00 | Before we can become anything we need a decent education system. We are going backwards at an ever increasing rate. I notice that half of those who applied to become teachers failed to be accepted into training school because they couldn't read or spell properly. Before we can become anything we need to learn the three "R's". Jack |

What's more important is the application of education, and the motivation to stay in New Zealand to use it. Sure that's a pretty much all-encompassing statement. But I think of eg how well regarded Auckland university is in international circles, and how many of our graduates migrate. We do so much better at farming. Not only dairy products but also farming our educational facilities to foreigners, who come here to learn on the cheap, then bugger off to their home countries. |
