325510 2005-02-16 01:14:00 I hear Telecom have managed to cut a fibre link/cable which has knocked out the bottom half of the south island? Anyone heard anything else? The Xtra web site (as always) is somewhat lacking in information.... pixeldust (6619)
325511 2005-02-16 01:16:00 Confirmed that report. However as far as our client base is concerned it's only affecting Invercargill.

That's about all the information available to ISP's at the moment.

325512 2005-02-16 01:35:00 Hmmm... we have all customers knocked out in Dunedin, Invercargill, Wanaka, Omaru.. pixeldust (6619)
325513 2005-02-16 01:55:00 Well apparently Telecom have advised that the outage is due to fibre damaged by falling rocks (?!) 15k north of Dunedin and expected ETA it to be repaired is 1700. pixeldust (6619)
325514 2005-02-16 02:32:00 We run all our own kit in Chch/Dunedin etc. The only thing we rely on Telecom for is Invercargill.

Our servcies to Invercargill were restored ~1503 so expect most others to follow soon after.

325516 2005-02-16 20:14:00 Ms Berry said it was hoped such incidents would become a thing of the past because Telecom was working on a project to improve the strength of the cable.

ROFL, it will still be cut through by overenthusiastic digger operators...

325518 2005-02-17 22:58:00 It amazes me that contractors cutting through a fibre link could cause such a huge outage over such a large area? I would have thought there would be some sort of failover system for incidents like this? pixeldust (6619)
325519 2005-02-17 23:22:00 I think they did - but when you fall back on the other smaller ones it does expect a whole lot more out of the backups - when it went down I tried calling a couple of people - overloaded mostly but you could get through - if you were lucky. 50,000 people can make alot of phone calls, download porn and communicate - maybe it fell back to going via the west coast, a much smaller cable it could be quite a strain (not that I have a clue of the physical makeup of the telecom network). But one thing is sure it works like a tree - one main trunk from Auckland => CHCH, a maller CHCH -> Dunedin and then another smaller one to the lower south island.

But lets not be fooled here - TELECOM IS EVIL. They do not service their customers more than the bare munimum, make far too much profit and thanks to monopoly of telecomunications in NZ act like a predator to competitors. We are all missing out on numerous of oppertunities thanks to a very medicre telecommunications system in NZ.
