323818 2005-02-11 04:09:00 Do you leave your computer on 24/7 or do you shut it down when you don't use it?

And why?

323819 2005-02-11 04:13:00 I usually shut it down as it will keep our Budgie awake :D Dannz (1668)
323820 2005-02-11 04:17:00 I don't leave it on 24/7, but I also don't really shut it down as such. I hibernate almost exclusively. I suppose technically the PC is shut down (powered down), but I don't use the "Shutdown" option.

323821 2005-02-11 04:20:00 I always shutdown my PC before I go to bed and use standby during the day when I am not using it Davesdad (923)
323822 2005-02-11 04:47:00 I leave my main computer running 24/7, but turn the LCD monitor off when I am away for any lenght of time. My current uptime is:

[jennifer@myth ~]$ uptime
17:33:50 up 11 days, 1:50, 3 users, load average: 0.37, 0.21, 0.14
[jennifer@myth ~]$It would of shown a much greater uptime but I had to reboot it 11 days ago when trouble-shooting why my ADSL was running like molasses on a cold winter's day

Linux is good like that, you only have to reboot if you have installed a new kernel, otherwise you can install/remove/do what you like without having to reboot :D

323823 2005-02-11 05:05:00 Im with Jen on this..... Its always on. Only have to restart when changing hardware or kernel.

This current kernel sucks though and I wanna try a differen scheduler.

Anyways:

chill@SuperNova chill $ uptime

323825 2005-02-11 05:17:00 I only restart for kernel changes (stuff that isnt a module)

The first uptime is for the server.

fissy@ILLserver fissy $ uptime

323826 2005-02-11 05:19:00 I turn my main PC off, because it makes too much noise when I sleep - but leave my servers on. Growly (6)
323827 2005-02-11 05:42:00 i leave mine on all night downloading demos and programs i need,i have a countdown timer that turns my pc off at 8am just as i leave for school, so my parents can use the net during the day while im at school . in the weekends i leave it on .

i dont think there is any big problems with leaving it on 24/7, but it pay to monitor your temps and get an extra fan if required .
