As for new.net, If you remove it via add/remove in the cp it uninstalls without needing a winsock fix. If you remove it with a spyware scanner it causes damage. When cleaning a system it pays to see what can be removed via the cp before ripping stuff out with a spyware killer. |

Page 109 in Dec PCWorld tells us of banks airlines etc getting hit.If you have the secret you could soon be in the money.Sometimes its just kids using the computer who install great looking talking monkeys or whatever that lead to the trouble........... Ah windows is so user friendly, damn it! :badpc: |

| 323977 | 2005-02-12 06:27:00 | Most viruses arrive by email so it is not the problem it once was because of ISP filters . You only have to look at ISP stats to see the number of viruses being caught, before filters these were going straight to users inbox . Of course you can get a virus by other than email but they are not an epidemic and of course it is advisable to have an updated anti-virus program to catch these - unless you are on a Mac of course . I think I have done more new . net removals than you Matla with all due respect and I can assure you that removing from add/remove in CP does not always fix the problem, infact it seldom does . It is the first step only and usually you need to do a winsock2 repair as well to get websites again . For your information this is you do it for W98/ME XP is different Go to Add/Remove programs in the control panel . If you find New . Net, New Net Domains, The New Net, or Save Now listed there, remove it . Reboot when finished and try receiving traffic, both e-mail and web-sites - if unsuccessful continue to the next set of instructions . Step Two: Go to Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Windows Setup Uncheck Communications . Click Apply and then OK . It will ask you to reboot . DO NOT REBOOT . Open up the registry editor by going to Start --> Run --> regedit . exe --> Click OK Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es . At the bottom of that thread you will see a folder called Winsock2 . Right click on it and delete the folder . Close the registry editor . Go back to Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Windows Setup Double click on Communications (the word, not the tick box) . Put a tick in Dial up Networking . Click OK --> Supply the Windows CD if prompted --> Click Apply --> and then click OK . You will be prompted to reboot . This time - REBOOT . |

| 323978 | 2005-02-12 06:47:00 | . Seriously though, please make it stop . You use a mac, and that's your choice . Please stop making threads about how we should use Macs . How would you feel if we went to the macguide forums en masse and spammed their forums? You are quite welcome to go to any Mac forum and post and many windows users do this . This is a computer forum and not a Windows forum, even PC World have Mac articles at times so what is your problem . Do you want this to be exclusively for Windows and would you like the Linux users to post somewhere else as well . Don't get me wrong, I don't mind Mac users posting here (It's interesting what they've done in Desktop showcases), however it does get a little irratating when Mac users come and (I'm not meaning you or Sue here, so don't get me wrong) troll constantly about how macs are far more secure . |

You could have fooled me. It was done with good intentions and going by the number of views 356 it has created considerable interest and hopefully something to think about. |

I never stated add/remove fixes the issue, But when done as the first step allows the removal without needing the winsock fix . How many times do you presume i have removed new . net off computers, Go on, Have a guess I could do with another laugh . Your material is priceless . |

I often do that It was done with good intentions and going by the number of views 356 it has created considerable interest and hopefully something to think about. I don't deny that. I never did, so why pull that this argument out of thin air? I'm not against people posting Mac v. x86 threads, as it's interesting to see where everyone stands. What I am against is Mac Trolls hijacking threads turning them into "OMFG macs r betta l0L!!!111" threads |

How many times do you presume i have removed new.net off computers, Go on, Have a guess I could do with another laugh. Your material is priceless. I can only assume you have not been doing it for several years or you would realize what works and does not work. I have proved it many times. If removed in add/remove as the first step it invariably needs winsock done as well, not always but in most cases. |
