Not True for most models but believe what you want to .

It's just the same as the usual "Mac's are more expensive" In most cases they are very similar in price and in some cases cheaper for what you actually get .
Please don't forget the great software that is included in the price .
Last but by no means least, windows viruses etc can only damage Windows PCs & MS software not Macs .

If you are as happy with your computer as I am with my Mac, Great .
Some might actually like to know a little more about the other options available .

I come here to learn more about computers and what is happening from a Kiwi perspective not to judge other members preferences .

I own and use a Windows XP PC & a Mac with OSX Panther, I just prefer working on my Mac .

324239 2005-02-15 07:44:00 Really?

First let me say I have no issue with Mac's,they are just a computer and the world needs more then one flavour of anything.

But.

A high end PC kills a high end Mac dead,in short order and with no room for debate.

Infact a PC in any price range is far more powerful then a mac of the same value...Macs are expensive, usually twice the price of a PC to get similar ourput...and thats even if it can be done...I have no idea if you can drop a 6800 Ultra into a MAc,...Not that you would because games simply aren't suported.

Upgrades.

Quick, Grab a screwdriver and swap out your motherboard.

Can't do it?

Didn't think so, Besides the Mac item would cost the deposit on a house. There is more to an upgrade then adding ram.

Security.

MS should be strung up and shot for their shannigans as far as security is concerned, But then Apple have never been targeted so nobody has any idea what there product would stand up to under sustained attack,

324240 2005-02-15 08:05:00 I like being able to upgrade computers. Want to burn DVDs? Pop a DVD burner into a PC, away you go. Drop the same one into a mac and... errm, why won't it work? Oh yeah, because you've got to use the twice-the-price "offical" hardware.

So you do get one. You think "I might use that wonderfully powerful iDVD thingy to burn all my cherished videos of 2 year old/puppy/kitten."

Last I looked you needed to buy 3rd party software for DVD authoring, as due to "licence issues" iDVD wouldn't work on anything other than the bundled drive. Which kinda blows the "Macs are actually cheaper" theory. So, either you buy the expensive hardware to utilise the "free" software, because if you get a budget model, you'll have to buy extra hardware & software, and costs climb up. And up.

Case in point. How much will it cost to add a Double layer DVD writer? From DSE, $154 NZ, software included.
For the Mac? For a 16x DL Firewire drive, $186 US, shipping not included

Want to upgrade? Not so cheap now is it?

"Edward, why can't I use the nice new computer?"

"Sorry Julia, I've got to buy the $108 KB & Mouse, and the $1,705 screen to get it to work, because they use freaky non standard plugs, thereby making the price skyrocket . Sorry"

Or you could buy the nice shiny DSE computer that had Windows XP & Open Office preinstalled . Plus a DVD Burner that you can use ;)

Try and stick to the facts Edward - you are just confusing the situation.

You can buy the Mac mini and use your existing PC monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

VGA video output (using included adapter) to support analog resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 pixels

S-video and composite video output to connect directly to a TV or projector

324246 2005-02-16 03:49:00 Wowee! I didn't realise that I could plug my KB/Mouse into the non existant PS/2 ports on it! When was that feature added? Edward (31)
