No one can speak well, unless he thoroughly understands his subject.

When you wish to instruct, be brief; that men's minds take in quickly what you say, learn its lesson, and retain it faithfully. Every word that is unnecessary only pours over the side of a brimming mind.

They broke in and rearranged the furniture."

Apple's approach, and the "lay of the land", is very different from Microsoft and the time it first made it's mark. Apple is not an software or hardware maker, it is both of these plus a personal electronics maker and a content provider. An integration of all these products and services, and I would imagine a lot more in the pipeline, will make it an irresistable force for consumers. Apple will start dictating defacto- and pseudo-standards just like Microsoft is trying to do now.

As the cited article mentions, Microsoft is just not cool anymore. Microsoft has also been stumbling badly with the very things it depends on for income - the OSs. Longhorn (remember that thing?) is about 2 years behind schedule, as is the IE update that is tied to it. XP, even with SP2, is still highly vulnerable. More and more large organisations, and even whole countries, are seriously considering open source.

324230 2005-02-13 21:40:00 I don't really want Apple to replace MS although I much prefer using my Mac.
A Rolls Royce just wouldn't be the same if everyone had one.:p
Mac isn't as closed as some seem to believe but one does have the benefit of dealing with just one company if something goes wrong. Having a PC company blaming MS & MS blaming the hardware manufacturer leaves the poor owner in a no win situation. With a Mac the buck stops at Apple. If you want to swop out the various parts of it then thats on your head.
:2cents:

Slashdot recently linked to a forum thread about Why Macs STILL only have a one button mouse.

The oddest argument from the Mac camp was that two button mouses and the menu they spawned when you right clicked was confusing and scary for newbies.

However they also stated that clicking once while using a keyboard shortcut was a perfectly acceptable way for a novice to navigate Mac system menus.

It struck me as odd that someone who is perceived as being daunted by a right click menu was automatically competent at mouse clicking while using a keyboard at the same time...

Of course the simple answer is:

1. Mac wont go for two button mice cos it would be admitting they got something wrong.

2. If you dont like a one button mouse, buy a 2 or more button mouse, plug it into your Mac and go nuts.

324231 2005-02-13 23:31:00 I actually don't see anything really wrong with microsoft. Sure, I can complain about their prices or something, but then, a lot of things cost money anyway.

But, it is good to have someone to groan about.

I agree 100 per cent. Imagine having to try and get Linux to work.

324232 2005-02-14 01:13:00 If you want a multi button scroll mouse on your Mac go for it. They are supported. If you have ever used a Mac you would know that a held left click brings up the context menu anyway, no need for a right click. Control click is just a slightly quicker way of doing the same thing. :) Sue (33)
324233 2005-02-14 07:31:00 But that means that you'll have to spent money on somehting that windows users get as standard. Even if the second button is redundant, I'l go insane if I didn't have a scroll mouse there in front of me Edward (31)
324234 2005-02-15 05:08:00 ;) You must be one of the very few people around that still uses the same rodent that came with your original box.
Have fun with what ever you use.

324236 2005-02-15 05:26:00 Actually I don't use what I got originally. The old ball mouse has been swapped with an optical one. However, they both had scrolls, and were both x86 standard Edward (31)
