323838 2005-02-11 20:50:00 At the moment i shut my machine down at night, this is because it is in the same room as my bed, and i don't allways sleep that well with it on.

When i have run servers i leave them on. My next machine is to be placed in the next room and will be a web server. mmmmmm sever. That one will be on 24/7, or maybe i should just turn it on when people email me and want to look at the sites contained??
:illogical :illogical

My windows machine is on as required, and tends to fall over after a few days anyway, at least thats what i found back in the good old 24/7 kazaa days.
*waves walking stick about*

I voted "sometimes" as each situation has its own answer.

323839 2005-02-11 22:09:00 I shut my computer down every night, because
A) It's in a POS thermaltake case which is noiser than some cars.
B) It takes all of 30 seconds to be usable from power-on, so any downside to this is negligible.

323840 2005-02-11 23:29:00 if is in your room, leave it on and try and get used to the noise while it is on, it may work Prescott (11)
323841 2005-02-11 23:48:00 My computer resides in my room, Debian Sarge, uptime is:

rixth@debian:~$ uptime
12:37:18 up 1:22, 2 users, load average: 0.76, 0.64, 0.54
rixth@debian:~$

Power cut :(

I keep mine on 24/7 as much as I can as I am hosting my website and couple friends' sites. My computer is fairly nosiy, but now overly bad that I can't sleep with it. I have the side off in summer and just put a piece of gauze over it to keep bugs out. My case (www.pp.co.nz) I think it's quite nice.

323842 2005-02-12 03:21:00 I always shut it down. Reboot takes no time at all and I find that speed is always consistent with a daily cold boot. runs better.

Leaving the computer running uses more power than you might think. While the monitor may go into standby, the computer doesn't, unless set to hibernate, so you can burn through a kilowatt or two during the night. For a full-house machine, expect to burn 2-3 kilowatts overnight.

All that heat that your fans extract can translate into a measurable difference to the power bill.

No, hiberation is the sleep of the living dead.:D

However, sometimes they fail to wake up when asked.

323846 2005-02-13 00:01:00 me computer has around 7 fans and is in my room - i can live with router / switch / ap lights but not noise - its off from 12am to 8am noone (22)
323847 2005-02-14 00:49:00 I always turn it off. Firstly, because it's too noisey and secondly, because I don't trust my virus protection and firewalls to keep out the baddies. ckent (7267)
