2005-02-17 03:20:00 | Sure, if you go to makefriends.ru then it'll be dodgy, but if you get it from a reputable website, then I can't see what all the paranoia is about | Edward (31) | |
2005-02-17 04:51:00 | We have just the girl for you, as she is in Yorkshire, and has just asked us to try to find her a GIRL pen pal. She is 12 yrs old, and a member of our large extended family. Seems like a nice kid. Interested?? PM if you are, and we will send her hotmail address. PJ and MA.

2005-02-17 05:00:00 | Thanks PJ, pm on the way. For the record, we are not completely irresponsible computer illiterate parents. The pc is in the lounge, so we can supervise whatever the kids are doing using broadband. I agree, some are not like this, but we are trying to teach our kids wisely. That is why I specified email only correspondence, not IM.

2005-02-17 05:01:00 | I'm sick and tired of hearing of people from chatrooms being molested by fellow chatroom goers. They met them, they were violated - the way to stop this is not by restricting access, but more by education. Like teaching a kid to drive, but not letting him go more than 5km/h till he's 21 and struggling on the highway. bored.end(); For the record, my parents have no control over what I do :-)

2005-02-17 07:14:00 | All in SAFE hands I promise you. I have "Spoken" to Wotz & have asked him to contact my cousin in the UK. He is the little girls Grandfather, he asked us to find a Pen Pal for his Grand daughter. So there IS some security built in here. PJ | Poppa John (284) | |

2005-02-17 09:33:00 | For the record, we are not completely irresponsible computer illiterate parents. That was never suggested, my point was the irresponsibility of a teacher sending kids onto the internet to look for pen friends. She has no way of knowing the level of parental supervision given at homes etc to know it's going to be safe. Mind you that said, most of the people I went through university with that were becoming teachers had barely mastered english and math. In fact I was asked just the other night by a teacher in her second year teaching Std 3 how to spell allergy and the correct usage of their, they're and there. Scary. Sure, if you go to makefriends.ru then it'll be dodgy, but if you get it from a reputable website, then I can't see what all the paranoia is aboutSo where are the links to the reputable web-sites you know of where 10 yo kids can safely interact in an environment free from potential threats.

2005-02-17 10:15:00 | My girl has to find a pen friend overseas as part of her homework, and is allowed to use the net.. Where does the parents asking on a local self-help forum come in to the equation? Im not intending disrespect, just curious... I think the exercise is not that the child writes overseas, as Santa would do just as well, rather that they research and find something themselves right? ...Or have I missed the boat totally here? Chill.
