325425 2005-02-16 05:11:00 Good article that.

I think this extract sums it all up:

"But, once again, we have an industry which assumes all of its customers are crooks."

I'd be pretty cheesed off if I spent 30-40 bucks on a brand new DVD then found it didn't play in my dvd player.

Of course, that would suit the manufacturers and retailers of the new DVD players that come in to replace the old ones that won't play the protected DVDs.

It's all a scam to make a load of money.

325426 2005-02-16 05:51:00 Maybe Macrovision is making the new protection for HD-DVD or BluRay movies. That wouldn't cause too many problems because no-one has players for them yet and you can standardise them to work with the protection. If they put the protection on normal DVDs around at the moment, then yeah that would be pretty stupid. E|im (87)

"Macrovision said the new technology will work in "nearly all" current DVD players when applied to the discs, but it did not specify how many machines could have a problem with RipGuard."

"The new technology will be welcomed by Hollywood film studios which are increasingly relying on revenue from DVD sales."

- It's the old price issue again. If they made them cheaper, then they wouldn't be worth copying and people would go out and buy alot more. But come on, asking 20-30 or more $ for run-of-the-mill movies that probably only get watched once? They're only any good for filling up the space on the bookshelf or in the video cabinet.

325428 2005-02-16 07:54:00 The only thing killing the Movie/Music industry is the RIAA/MPAA distributing bubblegum music/movies thereby stifiling development of genuine talent by not giving grants to the most deserving Edward (31)
325429 2005-02-16 08:50:00 I'd be pretty cheesed off if I spent 30-40 bucks on a brand new DVD then found it didn't play in my dvd player. That still happens now anyway - different zones can cause that.

I bought a "zone free" DVD from the big red shed the other day and it wouldn't play, I had to *ahem* tweak the Zone 4 DVD player to accept it.
